Conversations with Brielle Stephenson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brielle Stephenson.

Hi Brielle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am an owner, designer and head of marketing for Magic Garden Dreams. A new kind of Landscape Design company here in San Diego. Our company began in a workshop in the tropical foothills of the Amazon jungle in Peru, designed to cultivate human happiness. Inspired by the magic of the jungle and the dreams of four friends to create amazing works of art together. Myself, Brielle, an entrepreneur and artist. Benjamin a landscape designer/builder, Adam a master carpenter, builder and sculptor. And Bart, a wizard of lighting and electrical fun chose to come together to create a business that would allow all of us to collectively reach unbelievable methods of creativity and inspiration in all our projects.

San Diego, California, was chosen as the place we would all converge because of its amazing yearlong weather and the amazing community of open-minded, creative people who dare to think outside the box with design concepts and artistic pursuits. From small backyard residential projects to large commercial installations, we believed this to be the greatest place on Earth to launch a new kind of landscape design and build a business, one that focuses on artistry and creativity. Even the plants that grow here seemed to have a more magical and surreal feeling to them.

Today, Magic Garden Dreams is just sinking its roots into the community of San Diego, connecting more and more to the people and businesses we look forward to growing with in each passing season. Our team is filled with new and exciting inspiration that grows with each job, and we truly are feeling like family. It is a very fun and stimulating time for our business, everything is fresh, and everyday new challenges and opportunities are presenting themselves. We are focused on creating with our hearts and connecting with our clients to make not only incredible landscapes but masterpiece works of art on their properties and in their homes. We are lucky to have the greatest job in the world. When it comes to an artistic palette, you cannot beat using the materials and colors of all the elements; earth, water, stone, plants, fire, and wood. We get to expand and create new amazing ways of how they interact with each other and with the people who get to enjoy them.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whenever embarking on something as adventurous as starting a new company, there are always challenges that come up along the road. One of our biggest struggles has been getting our fourth partner Bart to immigrate to the United States. There is a lot of paperwork, hoops and jumps to go through to get him here working hands-on with all of us, and the process has had some setbacks in the recent months due to COVID restrictions.

Another one has been starting over fresh in San Diego. None of us really knowing anyone when we moved here, making connections, and finding clients in a new city, especially during COVID, has had its challenges. Overall, the four of us work together in a pretty remarkable partnership, and always feeling like no matter what, someone has your back makes whatever challenges come up for us, something we know we can handle no matter what.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Our goal with every one of our projects is to create a space that feels like something out of a dream, something that feels like magic. Working with water and creating water gardens, waterfalls, water shrines, and tranquil ponds allows our clients to enter a space they are excited to spend time in with their families. It attracts the birds and butterflies, gives a home to the colorful fish, and creates the perfect environment to build our colorful gardens and outdoor structures and furniture around to enjoy. Lighting up the moving water during nighttime creates the perfect glowing background to rest and relax or have a firepit jam with family and friends. The sound of moving water creates a feeling that most people have to go on vacation to accomplish. To us, this is the whole point. This is the magic. Bringing the feeling of an exotic and relaxing paradise vacation into your own backyard.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Working as a team. Always having each other’s back. Always have fun. That is the whole point. “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm”. – Winston Churchill
