Conversations with Cristina Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Guzman.

Cristina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Tijuana, B.C. and came to San Diego at the age of 5. I am the oldest of siblings and only girl. Growing up I had many dreams of being a doctor, a dentist, a teacher, etc. However, as I got older I started to realize those were careers that I was being told to dream of and pursue. But, I was always so intrigued by watching my mom get ready; I would sit on the edge of the bathtub and just look at everything she’d do to look her best, even if she was just going to the corner store. Once I became a teenager and my parents started to let me play with a couple of makeup items I never wanted to leave the house without looking my best as well. I’d wake up 2 hours before everyone just so I could start to get ready. I do believe that is how my passion for what I do now grew. I love creating, and making others feel and look their best. Makeup is art, believe it or not. Our faces are the perfect canvas to create magic, and the best part of it all is that at the end of the day, it can all be wiped off. But of course, there are days I doubt myself and what I do, but thankfully I have my wonderful fiancé who always reminds me that I get to do this because I am better than what I credit myself to be. I started this journey about 5 years ago, and I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in another 5.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am not a certified makeup artist, but I do like to think of myself as an artist. I create on my clients faces, and I leave a little bit of myself in every single one. It’s not always easy, I do like to think that if I had the schooling behind it I would go further in the career I’m trying to build. I never like to discredit fellow makeup lovers that actually got certified, and there have been times I recommend others rather than take a job myself because I know how hard this is. But I am learning along the way and have realized that I really love what I do and unfortunately this is a competitive world, and if I want to get to the top I have to fight my way as well. Life always throws something my way, but I like to think of the end goal and remind myself that things are only temporary.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist. A makeup artist. A creator. I help others feel their best. Makeup has the power of doing that for us. I am thankful to have had many opportunities to help my friends, family, and others get the look that they wanted and walk out my door ready to conquer anything. I like to think of myself as a confidence booster; my clients are beautiful just the way they are, I just add a little magic to help their confidence come out. I have done many looks; bridal, prom, Halloween, you name it. I never say no to a new opportunity. I am very proud of myself for always taking on a new task, although there are times I doubt myself and don’t believe I’ll be able to accomplish what my client is asking for, I always succeed and do better than what I thought. I do believe that my specialty leans more towards bridal looks and sultry looks. Enhancing my clients natural beauty is what I live for. Everyday I’m learning new techniques and methods that I love to apply to my clients and learn along the way. I have also been very fortunate to have gotten recognized by small businesses and have been honored to work alongside them. Brands have reached out to share their products with me and in return I share it with my clients/followers. Getting to work with these companies has been a huge accomplishment for me.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
If I hadn’t doubted myself and my ability as a creative person, I would’ve done this much sooner. For years I would tell my friends that I wanted to do this, but I wouldn’t let anyone know how scared I actually was to get started. Fear can prevent us from becoming who we want and doing what we want, but I also believe that everything has its timing. Perhaps this was the time for me.
