Conversations with Lauren Vredeveld

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Vredeveld.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I always loved taking photos with my old film camera and seeing what image was captured after they were developed. In high school, I would spend my free period in the school’s darkroom with my friends taking photography. As much as I loved the entire process, I was always too nervous to try (and fail) to pursue photography.

Lacking the confidence in myself, I pursued a different path in college and ended up in the legal department for a company after graduation. My coworker was into photography, so I would constantly ask him questions about his business, gear and anything else I could think of. I couldn’t get enough information, I was enamored with photography but too scared to make a career change.

I met my husband while he was stationed in San Diego, and a few months after we were married, we relocated to Germany. Germany is where my love of photography flourished. Being around gorgeous landscapes everyday, I found myself wanting to photograph everything. I would go on photo walks and beg my friends to let me take their portraits. My sweet dog definitely got tired of me sticking my camera in her face. I took every online class I could find to learn my camera and how to properly take portraits of people. Not knowing where my niche would be, I tried it all.

A lightbulb went off when my first son was born. I wanted to capture every moment of him growing up, and that’s when I knew my heart belonged in documenting Motherhood. I found a local newborn photographer to mentor with, and I realized maternity and newborn photography was more than a hobby, this was my career.

We moved to Virginia, and my business was born. Over the next five years, the business grew and I loved every minute of it! One pandemic and cross-country move later, we are back in San Diego, and I’m exciting to be launching my business on the west coast.

Even though my kids are older and no longer in those first years of life, my heart (and business) will always be with maternity, newborn and family photography. Those first few years go by in a heartbeat, so I am honored to capture those tiny moments for my clients.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would love to say it has been a smooth road, but it has been full of ups and downs and even sideways moves. Being a military wife with young children, I have had to figure out how to run a business by myself, sometimes with no childcare or support. Moving a business to the opposite coast has also had many hurdles including a healthy dose of self-doubt, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Each memorable moment I’m able to capture for my clients makes the struggles worthwhile.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer specializing in maternity, newborn, and family photography! I absolutely love capturing the big and small moments with you and your family – the love, the silliness and the sometimes unpredictable. My clients become family, and I am so grateful to watch their families grow over the years.

My goal is to take care of my clients from the first phone call all the way to the custom artwork throughout their homes. These milestones in life are meant to be celebrated, not forgotten on a computer or USB in the back of a drawer. I love being able to help my clients find the perfect place to showcase their images, whether it’s a canvas on their wall or an album that they can look through as their sweet babies grow up.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My Family is truly what makes me happy. Being a mom to two boys keeps me on my toes constantly, attempting to tell the most outrageous jokes to get them laughing. We go hiking, camping and have some of the best dance offs (that I am proudly the reigning champion of). My entire family is extremely supportive of my business, and they let me take my creative energy out on them with our ridiculous holiday cards. My family is definitely my happy place (dogs included, of course)!
