Conversations with Mariah Cattey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Cattey.

Hi Mariah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dance has always been a major part of my life. Since age four, I’ve said I wanted to have my own dance studio. From age 17-27, I was very involved in the San Diego dance community. I’ve taught all around San Diego, toured as a backup dancer, danced for several companies and more but still owning my own dance studio was always on my mind.

At 27, I became pregnant with my son, and I wanted to be a role model for him. I quit all my teaching/dancing gigs at nine months pregnant and started to look for a studio space. My son was born Sept. 2019 and I opened Limitless Dance Complex two months later in Nov. 2019.

Knowing he was watching my every move was just the motivation I needed. I hope that when he grows up, he knows that he too can go after huge dreams and that he’s not afraid to take risks. I know that if I want that for him, I need to lead by example.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No… and still isn’t. I went through three major life-changing events all at the same time. 1. Becoming a mom, 2. Becoming a business owner, 3. Being both of those things through a pandemic.

I’m still trying to navigate these things but am working on it every day. I don’t think I’ll ever have these things “figured out,” but every day I try to be more mindful about my priorities and being committed to doing the right thing. I trust that as long as I keep those two things in mind, everything else will fall into place.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Limitless Dance Complex is committed to providing quality dance instruction in a safe, family-friendly environment for all ages. In addition to dance instruction, we focus on community involvement and modeling a healthy team competitive spirit. Our goal is to use the art of dance which incorporates life skills, to create well-rounded dancers with strong moral character. Dancing boldly, living bravely is who we are and what we do.

What sets us apart from other studios is the strong family feel. We treat people like humans rather than just a client. We are committed to supporting all students in whatever their goals are inside and outside of dance. I also am a certified holistic health practitioner with a focus in kinesiology. I incorporate my knowledge in this field into my dance instruction. This gives my students an overall better understanding on how their body works, along with guidance on how to prioritize self-care and injury prevention.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would like to continue growing the family feel of the studio by expanding our baby and toddler program and offer workshops for parents. For our competition team I see us travelling abroad in the near future. 🙂
