Today we’d like to introduce you to Solve For X Mutual Aid Fund (Team).
Hello Solve For X Mutual Aid Fund team, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The beginning of the Covid lockdown was a scary time. SFX members were mostly secure in their job standing but saw folx in the LGBTQ+ community disproportionally impacted by illness and financial insecurity. They wanted to help and were inspired by others who took it upon themselves to serve the community. What started as a small project to get money to their neighbors turned into something so much more.
SFX aims to serve QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). SFX focuses on providing resources, emotional support, community support, and financial support. Since its conception in March 2020 SFX has raised over $30,000 and provided funds to over 200 people.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
SFX is a learn as you grow experience. Along the way we learned how to fundraise and distribute funds, create a social media presence and engage in partnerships with other mutual aids and local businesses. We were intentional about sticking to our values and making the process as transparent and accessible as possible. What helped us through the challenging times was reconnecting to each other, remembering why what we do is important, and taking rest when needed to prevent burnout.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What makes us unique is that we have a very strong sense of our values. SFX values include the following:
Abolition: dismantling white supremacist institutions, including the police
Rampant Queerness: Queer up every space
Accomplices: People who use their privileged identities to reduce systemic barriers for everyone.
Disruption: Disrupt the ideas of normalcy
Transparency: Transparent and open honesty about policy and procedure
Family: A chosen family rooted in loyalty, connection, and FUN
Tender Hearts: Facilitating and increasing emotional awareness and expression within ourselves and our community
One example of this is our “Rampant Queerness Clothing Collection” fundraiser, in which we created unique upcycled clothing pieces that reflected our values. These pieces were sold with the community in mind and in our hearts. We gave folx the opportunity to either participate in an auction or “pay what you can”, which allowed folx of all economic statuses to feel connected and engaged. Every cent was then redistributed to the Queer Trans Black Indigenous People of Color (QTBIPOC) community.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
We love that there are so many people passionate about mutual aid in San Diego. There is a deep care for the city and for our neighbors. What we like least is the POLICE and ICE. ACAB.
