Daily Inspiration: Meet Dean Sauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Sauer.

Hi Dean, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since the 8th grade, I knew that science was the road for me. I had too many unanswered questions and the encyclopedias that my parents purchased only created more questions. After graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in Biology I started working in a laboratory at Johnson and Johnson PRI. One of my duties was growing cell lines and this is where I learned to grow all different types of cells. I was also a co-author of two published scientific papers for this line of work. Little did I understand that a decade later this experience would be the basis of my current company, PyroFarms, where growing micro-algae is the foundation of the business.

PyroFarms cultivates a bioluminescent microalgae (phytoplankton) that can generate its own natural light at night when moved. This is beautiful to witness and the main reason people purchase the micro-algae (which we call PyroDinos). But I love these little plankton for all they do for us and the planet. The oceans’ phytoplankton produce most of the oxygen we breathe, are responsible for most of the life in the world’s oceans (from crustaceans to whales) and they are our main defense against climate change. I hope that their natural light will help guide us to being better custodians of the world’s oceans and this planet. Or as we say, ‘Enlighten the World’.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The current supply chain delays caused us to miss out on holiday sales. PyroFarms does about half of its business from mid-November through December during the holiday season. Our main product is the Bioluminescent Bio-Orb which is a glass orb micro-aquarium filled with our bioluminescent PyroDinos. Although we purchased our glass orb inventory for the holidays in May of 2021 and the shipment arrived in Long Beach in early October, the cargo ship with thousands of our glass orbs sat at anchor for several months and was not unloaded until after Christmas. We missed out on a ton of holiday sales. We actually received the shipment today, January 4th, 2022, seven months after placing the order. Not only did this deflate our 2021 sales but it also put us in a worse position for a 2022 SBA business loan we were planning on applying for.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We cultivate bioluminescent microalgae that grow in oceans all over the world. This algae or dinoflagellate is what scientists refer to as phytoplankton (plant-like plankton). We use filtered purified Pacific Ocean seawater and sunlight combined with LED lights to grow our plankton. We sell it under the trademark name PyroDinos. Its scientific name is Pyrocystis fusiformis.

How do you think about happiness?
Making other people happy. I love the feedback we get on our product. Although the reviews are not always glowing, most of our customers have a sense of awe when experiencing bioluminescence for the first time.

  • PyroDinos $29.00
  • Bio-Orb $69.00
