Daily Inspiration: Meet Jazz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazz. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Our story begins in January of 2020. Our founding members, Davyn (Dave) Waldapfel and Randall Hild, held weekly rehearsals in Dave’s mom garage, practicing and learning jazz standards. This routine lasted until March 2020, when COVID-19 hit and the world had to go into lockdown. However, despite this, each of us improved and mastered our own craft separately until it was safe to start meeting for rehearsals again. Jazz Inc. wasn’t brought to the public until October 2020, when we decided to start doing weekly pier concerts, free to the public. Since there was no available gigs at the time, the OB Pier seemed like the best place to spread our music. As we started getting back into the groove of the world slowly opening back up, we started to gig in more areas around San Diego, such as Balboa Park, Mission Beach, Downtown, and many more. On one of our gigs, we were suggested to start playing at the open mic event at the Template Café in Ocean Beach. From there, we have spread our talent throughout the greater San Diego area. We have recently been in the studio (Doubletime recording studios), and we have multiple songs to share with everyone. Our newest single, “Four”, is out now!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was a very difficult road at first, as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down our whole operation in the first months. We had to find a way to still work cohesively as a band, even when we were away from each other and cannot rehearse as one. We would be in contact almost daily, communicating what tunes we wanted to practice, so once we could start rehearsing again, we would have a large catalogue of jazz standards. Finding gigs has also been a difficult task as well. Since COVID-19, so many venues in the San Diego have closed their doors permanently. Another difficulty is that, since we are all very young, we are not permitted to play in 21+ venues. Despite all of these hardships, we love overcoming the difficulties and sharing our music with the world.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We are known mostly for our wide varieties of genres while also still fusing them with the roots of jazz music. We perform many genres, such as rock fusion, bossa nova, hip hop, and any music we can find to fit with our jazz style. Although we have the setup of an average jazz quintet, we love to experiment with our instrumentation as much as possible. No one in Jazz Inc. sticks to one instrument. Davyn plays trumpet, coronet, and flugelhorn, Dominic plays all of the saxophones and the clarinet, Tavis plays bass and guitar, Brion plays drums and all sorts of other percussion instruments, and Randall plays piano, drums, and bass. With everyone being so versatile in their own right, it makes it more fun to experiment with certain instrumentations with certain genres. Two of our best examples of genre-bending is our arrangements of two very famous songs, “Come As You Are” by Nirvana and “All Caps” by MF DOOM. Come As You Are is originally a rock and grunge, however, we bend this into an afro Cuban arrangement, played with maracas and a muted trumpet. All Caps is an old-school, underground hip-hop song, which we have transformed into a funk jazz tune, complete with saxophone and trumpet harmonies and jazzy piano riffs. We love our firm roots of jazz and experimenting with as much music as possible, as we believe all music has energy that can be incorporated into jazz.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
We’re all under 21 years old! As of writing this, our youngest member, Dominic Negrín, is only 14 years old! Despite being so young, we still have all found a similar passion in music and plan to continue it for the rest of our lives. Since we are so young, we usually aren’t allowed to play in bars or nightclubs, due to our age. However, we are still able to find local restaurants or cafes that are willing to have us perform. Another fun fact that some people might not know is that some of us have known each other for almost a decade! Davyn and Randall met in the 5th grade and have shared a passion for music ever since. We have also all met one of our biggest inspirations, Thundercat. He is very chill and we loved talking about music with him!
