Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Ledezma.
Hi Kelsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Mobile Vulgaris started somewhat as a hobby. My fiance and I started gardening in 2016 and it quickly became one of our greatest loves. He grew barrels of veggies and I insisted on buckets upon buckets of flowers. It wasn’t long before I started putting them into arrangements and began to realize the career in sound design I was currently working was not how I wanted to spend my time. For the next couple of years, I worked on learning everything I could about floral design and then in 2018, the loss of one of my best friends to breast cancer triggered something in me. I knew I had to make the change and pursue what made me happy. In the days after her death, I started Mobile Vulgaris, a luxury floral design studio specializing in weddings, events and installations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have definitely been struggles. A lot of them have been the usual things like finances and finding clients but then there are some for me that are a little less usual. I use a wheelchair full time so the way I work can be a bit different from my fellow floral friends and figuring out what would work for me was definitely a challenge at first. I will say though, that aspect has gotten much easier over time. I also can’t forget about COVID. Like so many others, my business took huge hits with every booking canceling. With the lack of work for both myself and my fiance, we took it as an opportunity to start over and move to San Diego to further pursue floral design when things opened back up. While moving my business has been a challenge all its own, I’m so happy we took the plunge and did it. My business is blooming and we absolutely love the area.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mobile Vulgaris specializes in weddings, events, and installations. We love a bold choice and large pieces and we are known for our moody, gothic vibe. One of the things I’m most proud of is the creativity that comes out of our studio. There really is no rinse and repeat, each client is different and so each event is different. One of the things that set us apart from other floral designers is our attention (obsession) to detail and likelihood to think outside the box. We aim to wow!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
When I was a kid, I had an obsession with the show Platinum Weddings – specifically the centerpieces. It did not occur to me then that I might want to get into flowers. Later in college, I took a “careers” class, you know one of those to help you pick your major. We took career tests (obviously) and my top two careers in order were florist and psychologist. I laughed at the thought of being a florist- now my psych degree hangs on the wall next to my stacks of buckets,
