Daily Inspiration: Meet LaTanya Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTanya Williams.

Hi LaTanya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is based upon stepping out on faith. Back in 2012, I visited a friend’s salon not far from where I worked to pick up hair products. We both were educators, and she was holding supplies for me. Long story short she was a military wife and her husband got orders to move and she asked if I wanted to buy her salon. I looked at her like it was a joke before knowing she had to move and she confirmed she was serious. I had no thoughts of owning a salon due to having a large family and my husband being in the military as well. I went back to work with this idea heavily on my mind. I discussed it with my husband and weighed out my options and questions of what do I have to lose. I was renting a booth and the owner always had issues with changing the radio and being OCD with things that rubbed people the wrong way. This particular day had my mind made up that I was going to move forward and buy her salon. I done all my research to own a business establishment and met with my friend to discuss leases and other things I needed to do. I discussed owning a salon with my father because he owned his insurance business for years and I needed reassurance that I would be ok. He reassured me because he longed for me to own my own salon for a long time. Low and behold it only took me a few months to get my loan, paperwork with all licensing, business name, and more to take over salon. With all of this work, I was able to officially open up my salon on June 10, 2012. The downside of this my father passed away unexpectedly the same day I opened. I see that God put me in a position to let my dad know of my accomplishment yet kept me busy to keep going. To this day I could not be any happier for stepping out on Faith and Trusting God to keep me going. He has truly blessed me and I give him all of the Glory for my success. What’s even better, my daughter works with me and we have a successful business together.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a very smooth road for me until covid happened. I only say this because I had foot surgery at the beginning of the year and did not expect to be home and shut down long. But once again when you have Faith, I seen it as an opportunity for me to heal. But prior to my surgery, I had to relocate my salon due to a restaurant flooding me out. A saving grace to relocate me to a better space with a cheaper lease prior to Covid. I always reflect on why things happen and the outcome for me is a blessing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a PROUD Salon Owner and hairstylist for over 25 years. I specialize in healthy hair care and work with ALL TEXTURES of hair, making me a multicultural stylist. When I went to school, I signed up to do ALL hair types. So, anyone that comes in my salon I am able and capable of doing their hair. This sets me apart from a lot of other stylists. A lot of stylists don’t do all hair types, and to me, I find this discriminating. You should be able to service everyone that walks through the door. I am also an educator to help stylists learn texture.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to those starting out would be to always educate yourself. Take business classes and classes to stay abreast because our industry is always evolving and if you don’t stay ready and heavily educated you can be lost in the sauce. Also always have an open mind because things change and are not always set in stone. When I was starting out, I wish the schools would focus more on textured hair and business. We always worked on straight hair but they lacked on texture which is a big deal now. As for business it very important to know the ins and outs to be successful.
