Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Haver.
Hi Laura, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Since I was a kid, I’ve been drawn to three things: playing, writing and tennis. My parents nicknamed me Play-Play Maloney (my maiden name), as I could turn anything into play. I wrote my first story in kindergarten where the crayons came alive at night once everyone left school. I was hooked on writing ever since. Then I fell in love with tennis and began another lifelong adventure. I played competitively in college for Ohio State, on a full scholarship, winning the Big Ten Conference. I also coached tennis throughout high school and into adulthood. After college, I moved to Sydney, Australia, and earned my master’s degree in International Communication. During that time, I met so many friends from all over the world. It greatly increased my ability to listen and communicate.
“Grown up” life was calling, so I moved to San Diego to join my family. I lived blocks from the beach and lived it up with a lively group of friends. Then my love of tennis and the beach combined when I found the sports beach tennis. I began to travel and compete on the Pro Beach Tennis Tour. Highlights of my career include partnering with my sister, being a 2x National Champion, playing beach tennis in Rockefeller Plaza on the Today Show, and being flown to Italy as the first American team to compete at the World Championships finishing top 16.
It was a great run, but then life took me in a different direction. I met a boy. He was my “summer fling”, but one thing turned into another and now we are married and have two kids. During this time, I continued to write. I started my blog and began working on a few books. I also continued coaching in leadership, life design, communication, and tennis.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course, there’s always some bumps along the way. Like most people, the COVID pandemic threw my plans for a major loop. 2020 was going to be the first year that both of my kids were going to be in school. I had plans to grow my coaching practice, publish my books, and had signed up for a new course to continue my own personal growth. Suddenly the kids were home 24/7 and I became their homeschool teacher.
But always one to make the best of things, I leaned into my love of play. The boys and I created the #WeWriteTheStory Challenge and posted a new game each day to my social media. The aim was to inspire other families to connect and make the best of a crazy time. It was a total blessing for our family and now I am sharing all the games in my first book, Play Together. It is a go-to guide for family fun and features over 65 games and activities to boost creativity, connection, kindness, movement, and mindfulness.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Life Design Coach, author, and inspirational speaker. It is such a joy to help inspire my clients to live playful, aligned, and intentional lives. I lead one-on-one, group coaching sessions and workshops. When my clients come to me, they often feel stuck, overwhelmed, or even just bored in their lives. They have an idea of what they want, but they can’t seem to make any progress toward achieving or maintaining it. Using my signature moms on a mission method, I help them get clear on their values, create the right habits, and bring more fun, energy, passion, and time into their lives.
As I mentioned earlier, I am about to publish my first book, Play Together; I am also editing my second book, Whirlwind Parenting: How to Calm the Storm, Connect with Your Kids, and Have More Fun. In addition to books, I write regularly on my blog, Chasing Havers at laurahaver.com/blog. I am a communication, play, and happiness expert and I am always fueled to keep learning.
I also created Author Moms, a community to connect, support and inspire fellow writing moms. It’s been such a blessing to build this community based on our shared passion for writing and motherhood. Reach out if you’d like to learn more. Outside of writing, I’ve been interviewed on multiple podcasts, featured on the news, and have spoken at several summits.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to view life through the lens of play. When you like to do something, you are more likely to do it! I help people reframe and clarify their lives in ways that naturally calls them into action. I also have an insatiable desire to grow and learn. I’m always reading books, studying new research, and growing my own knowledge base. My unique combination of academics, athletics, and play give me a distinct advantage as a coach and author.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Play! As an advocate for bringing fun to life, I use play to transform the lives of people around me. For my clients, my readers, and my audience, I aim to inspire them to find small ways to add more fun to their lives. Although it may take some practice at first, people are often amazed at how such tiny changes can have such a large impact on their overall lives.
I am also very intuitive and empathetic. I get people and help them open up to uncover areas that have been blocking them. Finding these blind spots helps catapult results. It’s crazy how things we made up years ago can hinder our progress today. It’s super cool enabling my clients to become aware of these stops and helping them to go on to live the lives they desire and love.
