Daily Inspiration: Meet Sarah Lotherington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lotherington.

Hi Sarah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Southern California born and raised, I’ve traveled all over the world and come to realize there truly is no place like home. After climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sunbathing on the beaches of Puerto Rico, and traversing the Great Wall of China in Beijing, I’ve settled back in Southern California designing picnics and parties as an art form. Because in addition to my love for exploring new places and meeting people from all walks of life, I love to party—in the classy soirée sense. And if I’ve learned anything from my journey, it’s that people are more alike than not, we all have the same basic needs, and we all want to find love and happiness. My goal is to spread this love by creating intimate and beautiful picnic events in which people can find those moments. That’s ultimately why I do it—for the love.

Life’s Short. Picnic! (a spin-off of Life’s Short. Party!) was born out of my passions for unique themed parties and for creating new ways to make people feel special on their birthdays that come around every single year. Specifically, how did it come about? During the 2020 pandemic, my family and I threw unique themed parties for each of our birthdays: Botanical Bliss Party, Celestial Soirée, Candyland Wonderland and Party Like A Pineapple. Each one included a related hands-on party experience from cheese fondue to cotton candy making. With the extra time the pandemic gave me to ruminate on the things I loved to do, a desire to create beautiful things increased until I decided to take the leap.

While Life’s Short. Party! will be coming in the near future, Life’s Short. Picnic! found its way onto the landscape of local Temecula Wine Country and coastal San Diego areas first due to (a) the prominence of outdoor gatherings, (b) the smaller-scale sets and (c) the gorgeous natural backdrops that nature has to offer. Life’s Short. Picnic! is my debut into the wondrous world of themed parties and soirées for the everyday person’s special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, baby showers, bridal showers and more!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a business comes with many challenges, and this one was no different. First, starting the business: this involved a few months of brand research, curating the designs, and conducting marketing photoshoots. Second, getting our first sale: this involved all of the above as well as community exposure. Third, continuing to grow: this involves consistent marketing, partner locations, and delivering a high-quality product to satisfied customers. Fourth, funding: this includes working to personally fund the business launch and then reinvesting proceeds back into the business. Fifth, logistics: this is the most ongoing challenge related to the physical transport of items.

The key to overcoming each and every challenge is to have a support system in place to discuss ideas with and most importantly to love what you do so much that it makes the hard work worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Life’s Short. Picnic! delivers heartwarming picnic experiences across Temecula Wine Country and San Diego markets. Each theme is uniquely curated to evoke a feeling of natural beauty and outdoor luxury, to encourage relaxation and bonding moments between picnickers.

Each picnic is designed to be an entire picnic party in one and includes gorgeous quality materials, fresh floral arrangements done by myself, a Bluetooth speaker for music and ambiance, conversation card games for a quality conversation experience, a complimentary sweet as a take-home party favor, an ice bucket with water or other beverage, and 2 hours to enjoy this outdoor reverie with the option to add more time.

Our debut designs include Blush Romance Picnic (rosy and pastels), Afternoon Oasis Picnic (aqua and olives), Sunset Vibes Picnic (rust and navy with Moroccan lanterns) and Rustic Romance Picnic (deep greens and wood bark), followed by Whimsical Sky (white and blue stripe) and Whimsical Rose Picnics (white, terracotta and macrame details), and most recently the Wine & Sage Picnic (wine and sage green colors with pampas) to celebrate the vibrant winery-esque colors. My hope is that the beauty surrounding the guests at each picnic activates feelings of love and levity that they will carry with them long beyond the picnic day.

What are your plans for the future?
Life’s Short. Picnic! plans to continue serving clients in Southern California long into the foreseeable future in order to help them celebrate life’s precious moments in aesthetically beautiful and exciting new ways. In addition, we will be making our floral arrangements available for sale, starting with delivery in the local Temecula and San Diego areas. Our philosophy of prioritizing the use of fresh flowers in our picnics to truly connect humans with the beauty of nature is something that I take great delight in and that I would love to share with an extended audience outside of our picnic clients by offering fanciful centerpieces for holidays, special occasions or simply “I love you’s.”

I have enjoyed being a part of countless birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, bridal showers, Christmas card photoshoots, engagement photoshoots, vow renewals and providing florals for a wedding reception these first nine months of business, and look forward to a year of continuing to spread the love of what I do with countless more guests on many more occasions that life brings our way… because if we don’t celebrate the special occasions in life, then what is the point!

Finally, you can expect to see Life’s Short. Party! coming in the future, providing pre-curated themed sensational soirées by way of the themes I know and love: Botanical Bliss Party, Celestial Soirée and Candyland Wonderland, just to name a few. Each of these will include themed decor, a party playlist, experiences, thematic menu, and cocktail to boot. I hope that you will picnic and party with us in the near future and thank you for your love and support every step of the way! Cheers!
