Daily Inspiration: Meet Selena Arellano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena Arellano.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Selena Arellano, the owner and lead designer of Sun Flor Co, a growing floristry company in North County, San Diego. I am a second-generation florera, my mother worked as a florist for more than 20 years and my father is a local flower grower.

I grew up selling flowers in a swap meet, on the streets and in my community. These experiences have really defined my path and shaped my business to what it is today. I have had many opportunities to learn from other designers and experts in the industry, allowing me to expand my offerings and provide flowers for all occasions. I started Sun Flor Co so I could provide unique and accessible floral arrangements to all.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been quite a journey with some obstacles but I stay determined to build Sun Flor Co to be all that I envision. I started working on Sun Flor Co at the beginning of the Covid Pandemic shutdown. I was reduced work hours at my 9-5 and decided that this was the time to give back to myself and build the business I wanted. It was pretty exciting to see how receptive my surrounding community was to support my business. I have sold flowers every week until now since then and I have so much gratitude for my clients who have supported me.

As we learn more about the pandemics’ ongoing effect on our businesses, communities and ourselves, I really want to emphasize the importance of living in the present and being grateful for our every day. For me, this looks like flowering with purpose and intention by dedicating my work to celebrate love and family.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I provide a couple of services to my clients. I provide seasonal flower bouquets and arrangements year-round for people to gift and enjoy. I get to help my clients celebrate themselves and their loved ones by providing fresh flowers arranged for the occasion. I sell florals for major holidays like valentines day, mother’s day, etc. I love that these flowers represent love and gratitude for my clients. They purchase them with the intent to make someone feel cared for and appreciated.

I do florals for weddings and special events. It is truly an honor to be considered for a wedding because we are providing flowers that create an ambiance for their celebration of love. I also love seeing the photographs captured featuring our florals, these images are kept for a lifetime and that means so much to me.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see the industry rapidly changing now, there are many designers who are transforming our perspective of how flowers have been used. I live for change and love to see creative techniques that are elevating the industry’s opportunities. I am sure the industry will continue to grow in the next decade allowing many opportunities for designers, stylists and flower growers.
