Daily Inspiration: Meet Dr. Shannon Gregoire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Shannon Gregoire.

Hi Dr. Gregoire, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was a small-town farm girl who loved being around animals and being outside. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian and after 8 years of post-high school education, I finally graduated with my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine this May of 2022. I am originally from Massachusetts, completed my Bachelor’s degree at UMass Amherst in Pre-Veterinary Science, and then flew out all on my own to SoCal to attend Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine with nothing but my luggage to my name in a new state, new house with no family or friends. It was terrifying at the time, but I took a leap of faith and knew that I could make it work out here by myself, and I did. The first 6 months or so I would say was the hardest, and after that, it got easier over time as I became more comfortable and familiar with living in SoCal.

I think perseverance and being able to take risks both played a huge role in my personal and career development because without those my story could be completely different. I definitely grew more as a person in the last four years of my life than I ever have. There were many new pressures, from my education to my new environment, to being away from family and friends – it was nowhere near easy. The payoff [in the end] was spectacular, as I now have the confidence to go and achieve whatever I set my sights on, and I could move to a brand-new city alone tomorrow and know that I could definitely be happy and a make a life out of it. When you have a passion for something, chase it voraciously and without pause.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving from Boston to LA flipped my life upside down, as I was 3,000 miles from any family and friends, didn’t have a car right away, and only owned what I could fit on the plane with me and 1 checked bag.

Navigating a completely new city by myself was super intimidating, thank god for Google Maps and Yelp to guide me when I needed anything.

Negotiating my first car lease was 4 hrs. in an Ontario dealership until I got the deal on a car that I could afford at the time.

Making all new friends at once was super challenging because I didn’t have anyone to really talk to for a while. Trying to date in LA was honestly super annoying and most of my time was consumed by school so I didn’t do much of that either.

Balancing my time as a graduate student was extremely hard at first, but I learned my limitations pretty quickly

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a veterinarian for a small animal practice (cats and dogs). and I also have 2 podcasts, Vet Candy IRL for veterinary professionals and SimplyPets – for all my amazing pet parents out there!

I am also editor for Pet Candy Magazine that puts out a monthly issue of all the latest news and advice for pet parents!

I am most proud of being able to educate pet parents and see them and their furry family members live long and healthy lives together, with my help when needed.

I think what sets myself apart is my friendly communication style, outgoing and positive attitude, and wanting to truly make a difference in the lives of others.

What do you think about happiness?
My family (including furry family) members and friends make me the happiest, because no matter what, they are there for me day in and day out, good and bad, I can always count on them.

I also love my career and how I am able to be in the clinic with my patients and also bring amazing resources to pet parents and veterinary professionals through various media outlets
