Exploring Life & Business with Ami Markowitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ami Markowitz.

Hi Ami, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve done several things in life, but once I got into real estate, I realized it my calling. After a significant downturn in the economy that affected my previous business, I had to look for a job to support my family. Unfortunately, when I couldn’t find one after searching for a long time, I decided to get my real estate license. It’s something that has interested me for a long time and I felt that I could be good at it. When no one is hiring, you can pretty much always get a commission job as an independent contractor. Today, after several years in the business, I feel that I have established myself as an experienced Realtor in the community and someone that people can be proud to refer to. It is a very difficult business and extremely competitive, but I absolutely love what I do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. There are about 25,000 licensees in San Diego county, and the average person knows several realtors, so it’s extremely challenging to break through and stand out. it was a struggle at first to gain people’s trust, but through hard work and determination, I was able to survive in a field where the vast majority of new licensees don’t make it past 18 months. The first year I hosted many open houses for other agents every weekend. This allowed me to meet potential buyers that still didn’t have a realtor, and that’s how I was able to get most of my first deals. After people that know me, started to see that I’m succeeding and gaining experience, the referrals started to come in. Today, the vast majority of my business comes from referrals from friends and past clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full time licensed Realtor in San Diego, working under Compass.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Customer satisfaction is the most important thing to me. I truly try to put my client’s best interests above all else. Buying or selling a house is an extremely stressful event, and I love it when I can make the process as smooth and exciting for my clients as possible. Handing a key to a buyer at the end of the transaction, or helping sellers maximize their return and achieve their next real estate goal, is extremely satisfying.
