Exploring Life & Business with Angelea Iafornaro of Suga Skincare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelea Iafornaro.

Hi Angelea, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Suga Skincare was officially founded 2019. After about a year and a half of experimenting with formulas and natural skincare products, while selling at local farmers’ markets, I realized that skincare was a true passion. I wanted to create a brand where women felt confident in the products they were using, knowing the ingredients are both plant-based and effective. With all of nature’s remarkable solutions to our skin concerns combined with scientific research, there was a whole world to explore. I officially decided to take a leap into the realm of skincare and pursue my dream, so I went back to school to become a licensed esthetician and created my own business. Afterward, I began working as an esthetician, while simultaneously developing the Suga Skincare product line. 2020 was a challenge for our industry, among many others, but I was able to come out on the other side and I am so happy to continue doing what I love both from a product and service perspective. Our line has now began retailing in local esthetician studios and some boutique stores throughout San Diego!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There will always be struggles, it’s honestly what makes succeeding in anything that much better. There was of course the initial struggle of working part time while in school and figuring out how to make that work financially etc. Then getting started as an esthetician, finding confidence, being able to be new at something and take criticism and learn from mistakes. It’s all part of the journey and I think as long as you can go through the stages without rushing to the other side, you will go far. The biggest struggle by far was navigating a new business among a global pandemic, keeping it going and maintaining hope that we would survive through it. So much has changed in our world this past year, my first official year owning a spa, that has opened my eyes, taught me new skills and resilience, and helped me gain experience and confidence as an esthetician, brand, and business owner.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business and I are one in the same now, so everything mentioned before applies here. I specialize in skincare, primarily custom facials and peels, as well as eyebrow shaping and waxing.

I am most proud of my approach to caring for the skin and the client themselves. I have a strong attention to detail which I believe sets me apart and is why clients trust me and my work. Also, I love what I do and people can sense this!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Yes! Risk taking is a non-negotiable in business and life. There are of course circumstances, and not every risk may be worth it, but I would say if something keeps coming to your mind, day after day, week after week, then it’s a sign to go for it. I believe in our intuition and inner compass, especially if you have made mistakes and learned from them already. We are only here to experience life for a short while, and fear holds too many people back from their dreams. I believe that if you chase your passion, and make smart decisions along the way, while giving your 100%, then failure isn’t an option. You either win or learn, which is also a win and sets you up for the next step.
