Exploring Life and Business with Noemi Dumaplin and Jamila Hillebrand of Aurora Borealis Event Haus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noemi Dumaplin and Jamila Hillebrand.

Hi Noemi and Jamila, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2014, we started working together in a local hospital’s Marketing Department. While sharing an office, spending a third of our day together, our relationship quickly turned from colleagues to friends.

Separately, we both had a passion for unique events and creative design, and eventually realized that we worked extremely well together on event planning projects. Over the years, our combination of bold, unique flair and eye-catching design created memorable events, both small and large scale.

We often tossed around the idea of opening our own event and design company, but it took six years before we were ready to start the journey.

In March 2020, the time was right to take on a new adventure. Aurora Borealis Event Haus, or AB Event Haus, opened for business and we were ready to shake up the scene.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The timing could not have been worse for our launch. We started our company in March 2020, right before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Within a matter of days, businesses, schools, companies and organizations were closed and the community was on lockdown.

But we also saw an opportunity to continue serving our community. Although confined to our homes, people still wanted to celebrate important life events such as weddings, birthdays, new babies, and anniversaries. The puzzle was figuring out how to plan a celebratory event safely.

This became our first challenge. We had to pivot from producing in-person events to creating and designing virtual events. We turned to video conferencing platforms, which allowed us to properly maintain social distancing rules while executing unique, inventive celebrations for our clients.

With virtual events, we have several goals. We make sure our clients and their attendees don’t miss the fact that they aren’t in the same place. We aim to create exciting occasions from start to finish that generates an inclusive, energetic environment to keep our attendees’ interest.

Additionally, we remain creative and innovative. For example, we’ve designed exciting interactive games for guests using web-based platforms and had surprise sweet treats delivered to each guest’s home from an exclusive bakery. Virtual events give us the opportunity to think outside the box when it comes to designing one-of-a-kind details for our clients, which is at the heart of AB Event Haus.

Lastly, three words: experience, experience, experience. Our clients and attendees need to leave the event feeling impressed. We design experiential baskets for each attendee to touch on all their senses throughout the celebration. Although the timing was unfavorable, 2020 allowed us to hone our crafts. We are more creative. Our concepts, design and artistry are more advanced because of this challenge. With time and dedication, this obstacle became our greatest lesson and took our company to new heights.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Aurora Borealis Event Haus?
Aurora Borealis Event Haus, a business owned by women of color, wants to help you create not only a beautiful event, but a fun and memorable one, too. We named our company after the brilliant and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that occurs in the Northern Hemisphere – something that people travel all over the world to witness. We want our events to be remembered by attendees long after the experience.

Experience and expertise are at the heart of our company. Noemi is an artist who is passionate about creating fun and interesting things. Jamila aims to make your event dreams come true. Using her unique ability to take a concept to reality, she uses innovation, elegance and excitement to plan your special day. From designing inventive menus based on your theme to creating incomparable experiences for guests from the moment they step foot on the scene, Jamila tackles intimate to intricate events with the goal of delivering outcomes beyond her clients’ expectations.

We are deeply invested in celebrating the communities we serve and uplifting small businesses like ours. Our passion for event design is deep-rooted in our love for celebrating life’s moments, big and small.

For our clients, we ensure stress-free planning and production stages so the focus is on the event. At our events, we want attendees to immerse themselves in the event through all their senses – touch, taste, smell, sight and sound; that is our unique, distinctive approach to planning each experiential event.
