Exploring Life and Business with Corinne Schwartz of Centered Movement and Pilates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corinne Schwartz.

Hi Corinne, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Movement has always been a huge part of my life. As soon as I could walk, I was dancing. I was always surrounded by my incredibly musical family which led me to find inspiration through music and appreciate art. At a young age, I began my formal ballet training in Santa Cruz, California. At 11, I found Pilates. Pilates was so healing and beneficial, and I was completely inspired by my teacher, Teresa Moorleghen. I knew that I wanted to learn more about this incredible practice and all it offers. I continued to dance rigorously throughout high school and practiced Pilates on the side to help my body stay healthy. After high school, I decided to pursue dance further at California State University Long Beach where I graduated with a BA in Dance Science. College pushed me like never before but in the most beautiful ways. I met amazing artists, learned from the distinguished faculty at CSULB, & studied kinesiology and dance. It was in college I furthered my Pilates training and decided to become a Pilates instructor. I was honored to study under Karen Clippinger, not only my teacher training but in many of my classes at CSULB as well. After lots of sweat, studying, and practice, I complete the BASI Comprehensive Pilates Teacher Training with Dance Specialization. This was a dream come true for me.

I have had the opportunity to teach Pilates & dance at numerous studios in California over the years. I am forever grateful for all the studios I have been part of and I’d like to give a special shoutout the studio Balletiquette for inspiring me over the years and giving me so many opportunities.

I always dreamt of having my own studio, so while I loved the studios I worked at, having my own has always been a goal. I took a big leap in 2021 and officially launched my business Centered Movement & Pilates LLC. I currently teach online group classes, online private sessions, and in person private sessions. I am grateful to be teaching my in person sessions out of a beautiful co-working space, DanseMedica, in Sorrento Valley, San Diego.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t change anything! It has been a process and with that has come along many opportunities for growth and learning. My vision for my company is clear in my mind but the steps to get there have been challenging. As a dancer, artist, and science enthusiast, business & marketing are not my forte. I have had to learn and am still learning so much. More importantly, I am learning how to ask for help when things are out of my scope.

I officially launched my company just two months ago, so I am still building my clientele and getting my name out there. This has been a process, but I know that things will build and grow over time.

I am grateful for all my family & friends who have been so supportive and encouraging throughout this process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My company Centered Movement & Pilates LLC offers Pilates & dance training for all levels and ages. I offer online group classes, online Pilates private & duet sessions, and in person Pilates private & duet sessions. My in person Pilates sessions take place at DanseMedica, a co-working space in Sorrento Valley San Diego, where I have my Pilates reformer. I also provide off site private instruction for anyone looking for in home training in the City of San Diego or the City of Encinitas.

What is Pilates you may ask? Pilates is a mind-body form of training that consists of low-impact exercises to improve your mental and physical well-being. Pilates creates balance in the body by emphasizing muscular strength and endurance, mobility, coordination, control, awareness, & alignment.

My encouraging, loving, & empathetic spirit sets me apart. My top priority is that my clients are cared for, heard, safe, and welcomed, no matter what. My goal is really to help my clients feel better mentally and physically, to find joy in movement, and to have a space where they can come just as they are and find encouragement & support.

My background of years of dance training, the dance specialization portion of my teacher training, and my ABT teacher certification have led me to specialize in training dancers. That being said, I work with a range of clientele and love seeing clients from all different backgrounds and stages of life.

When you schedule a session with me, it will be tailored to your individual goals and needs. And you will leave feeling rejuvenated and balanced, whether it is your first time training or if you are a seasoned pro.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The seeds for my business were planted during the COVID-19 Crisis. Being at home much more than usual during the pandemic allowed me to slow down, spend my time with my husband, and devote my time into art, learning, and movement. During this time home, movement was my medicine. I moved to bring peace, clear my mind, and soothe my soul, which I needed during such a distraught time. It was so clear to me that I wanted to share the joy of movement with others, and thus, the idea for my own business was hatched. Slowing down allowed me to see what my true desires were and what was important to me.
