La Jolla Fencing Academy, Southern California’s premier, state of the art fencing club, is dedicated to the Olympic sport of fencing and offers competitive and recreational programs.

We welcome students of all ages, skills and interests to learn this incredible sport and develop self-confidence, physical ability, discipline, sportsmanship, and lifelong friendships along the way.

While success always comes with hard work, our teaching philosophy revolves first and foremost around our students enjoying the process of training. Our team of world-renowned coaches utilize their decades of experience at the highest levels of the sport to guide our students—physically, technically, and most importantly, mentally—to achieve anything they want to!

LJFA’s SPARTAK Club was founded in 1991 by the head-coach Dmitriy Guy (US National Coach, US North American Open Champion, Two Times Maccabiah Games Champion and Soviet Union National Champion).

LJFA’s trains some of the best fencers in the world here in San Diego, CA. Our members include National, European and World champions.

LJFA’s students are members of U.S. National Teams, have won NCAA Championships, and have been named All-Americans at top colleges and universities.

LJFA is centrally located in UTC/La Jolla, in a modern, state-of-the-art facility with shock-absorbent hardwood flooring, climate control, and top-of-the-line fencing equipment.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Fencing, a sport of intelligence and strength, trains the body and mind to work together with a mental acuity and physical power that few other sports demand. Combined with a code of conduct, fencing develops the whole person and, by extension, the whole family.

We believe that the values and ethics installed through fencing such as kindness, respect, integrity, tenacity, and discipline will lead our students not only to excel in the sport but also in life.

OUR GOALS

To provide comfortable, friendly, fun and elite fencing education for athletes of all ages and interest levels.

To spread the wonderful sport of fencing around the San Diego community.

To provide an enjoyable and entertaining fitness activity that teaches our students the vital skills of fencing such as speed, agility, mental sharpness, reaction time, and strength.

To help our students get recruited by the finest universities in the United States.

To have our students excel at the highest level of competitions at the National and International levels.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Our club has taken a huge hit due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we lost a lot of business due to the lockdown. But now we fully recovered. Our membership numbers are back to pre-pandemic level.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about La Jolla Fencing Academy LLC?
La Jolla Fencing Academy was opened to 2017 to promote and attract attention to this amazing sport of Fencing that is still very unknown in San Diego. The goal of opening the academy in UTC/La Jolla is to invite the community to come enjoy the great sport of fencing.

The academy locates inside the shopping center and has an open concept design with floor to ceiling windows and everyone who is passing by can see what is happening inside and gets motivated to try fencing.

The facility is one of the best in the region with shock-absorbent hardwood flooring, climate control, and top-of-the-line fencing equipment. Our coaches are World-known.

Another name for fencing is “physical chess”— athletes must use strategies and think about how to outsmart your opponent in a condensed amount of time. That critical thinking time crunch can be useful in other endeavors, such as in standardized testing like SATs and ACTs. Kids can train their brains to work faster. A good student is a good fencer and a good fencer is a good student.

This is the only fencing club in the great San Diego area who has produced World and National Champions.

Our athletes have been recruited to compete for the most prestigious colleges in the US, including Caltech, Harvard, Columbia, Notre Dame, Wharton School of Business (UPENN), UCSD, NYU and many others.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
“I was not an athletic child and was not good at sports, but I liked math. When I was nine years old, the main sports club in Moscow, Russia was accepting students for its fencing program. The first year was difficult, my first coach hated me because I wasn’t coordinated or athletic, but I was able to strategize. Slowly I got better … and I’ve been fencing ever since, I think it’s the greatest sport in the world.”
