Meet Gerry Saucedo of American Edge Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerry Saucedo.

Hi Gerry, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been enamored with video and storytelling. As a child of the 80s and 90s, I grew up watching entirely too much television. My favorite part of the week (besides Saturday Morning Cartoons) was going to the video rental store after church on Sundays and picking out the latest film releases. In 7th grade, I took my first video production class and realized almost immediately that this was the career I wanted to pursue. I continued taking video classes all throughout high school at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, whereby the end of 10th grade, I had made my way up the ranks to the role of producer on our school’s monthly news program K-ARTS.

While enrolled in the tele-media program at Southwestern College, I took my first video production job at a local mom & pop shop that specialized in weddings and school events. I worked there for four years while I transferred and put myself through film school at San Diego State University. This is where I really started to learn cinematic storytelling, improving my composition, learning the importance of good audio, working with and directing large crews, and using actual film stock that was costing us money, an experience that I am eternally grateful for, and that I utilize every day in my career to this day. After graduating from SDSU, I moved to Los Angeles with my girlfriend, where I got a job at Roundabout Entertainment, Inc; a major post-production facility, where I worked for six years, overseeing the video editing department that worked on editing/mastering of big-name TV shows and films from huge clients such as Disney, Fox, FX, and where I officially “chilled” with Netflix, and where I single-handedly developed the 4K mastering workflow for Amazon’s Original programming, back when the technology was still brand new. My girlfriend was a successful store director at a major retail store, and everything was going according to plan. We got married and started a family. First came our firstborn son. A hilarious curly-haired rascal with a heart of gold. Then came our beautiful twin girls.

But as luck would have it, one of our girls was born with a congenital heart defect, and this completely turned our world upside down. After spending the first six months of her life in the hospital, going through multiple surgeries and complications from those surgeries, we were finally able to bring her home, however, due to the G-Tube she came home with, we were unable to put her into daycare, which ultimately led to us having to leave our amazing jobs, to move back home to San Diego, and be closer to our families, and essentially start over from scratch.

I was fortunate to find a couple video production jobs after moving back to San Diego and eventually took job at a TV production studio in Mission Valley that produced a local “paid programming” real-estate tv show. I helped them grow the company from a 4 or 5 person operation, producing a local show, to one that was producing shows in over 25 cities per week by hiring, training and managing their team of editors, and helping to build the infrastructure to put out that kind of volume, and even helping to come up with a new, more modern style for what their segments could look like.

After parting ways with that company, I realized there was a huge demand for high-end, high-quality, cinematic video production in San Diego for both real estate and all other businesses, and I already owned a lot of the equipment I would need to get started. That’s what led me to create American Edge Media.

Over the last two 1/2 years, I have gained a reputation as someone who pours my heart and soul into each project I work on and who makes it a point to go above and beyond the expectations of my clients, all while tossing egos out the window and being friendly, and a pleasure to work with. Through pure, organic word of mouth, I have gained a loyal group of clients that have allowed me the flexibility to not only spend more time with my beautiful family but to support them by doing what I love, which is to tell the stories of brands and people, through stunning, cinematic video content.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
What’s a good story without a little adversity? Other than the unfortunate health issues that my daughter had to go through, which led to us walking away from our dream jobs in LA to relocate back to San Diego, it has been a “relatively” smooth road since starting my own company. All the companies that I worked for in the past really helped me realize what kind of company I wanted to start, what things they got right, and what pitfalls to stay away from. Let’s just say that I’m proud to have started a video production company that is ethical and that puts my client’s needs above the bottom line. I believe that when companies only care about their bottom line, it eventually ends up hurting their bottom line. COVID obviously brought its own unique set of challenges, but I consider myself extremely lucky that the real estate market never really slowed down due to COVID; in fact, they needed solid video marketing for their listings more than ever, and with the proper safety precautions, I was more than happy to deliver.

In my 18 years in the video and film industry, I’ve just about done it all.

As for now, American Edge Media is a one-person operation, although I do have a network of copywriters, videographers, and editors, that I often work with when a project calls for a superhero team-up. For instance, all the best video content starts with pre-production, and that includes an incredible script. We realize that not every business owner majored in creative writing, and neither did I, so we often start by connecting you with a talented copywriter to get your messaging just right by crafting the perfect script. The script is the blueprint for the entire project, so from there, we have a creative meeting to go over the script and come up with the perfect shot list that supports the messaging of the script.

The last thing we want to do is “just wing it” when we get there. Pre-planning goes a long way in making the shoot go as smoothly as possible and leads to a more thoughtful and powerful finished product. This is one example of that extra care that I strive to give my clients. I use the latest in cinema cameras, gimbal stabilizers, motorized sliders, audio equipment and lighting, and stay up to date on the latest video trends, to really push the production value of your videos over the top and make them as engaging and attention-grabbing as possible. After the shoot comes my favorite part, post-production. This is where we find the right music and where the video and audio is edited and color graded; where I really start to put your story together, cause at the end of the day, that’s really my job; I am a storyteller.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe that every decision a person makes is half-luck and half-karma. I can’t explain why every job I’ve ever taken has eventually led me to a leadership role, just how I can’t explain how I ended up marrying the most beautiful girl in the world and having three beautiful children who I’m happy to say are now all happy, healthy, and doing great in school. All I know is that if you treat those around you with empathy and respect, and if you never look down on your peers; if you constantly lift each other up, instead of finding ways to tear them down in an attempt to get ahead, good things will happen to you. I’ve been blessed to make some great lasting friendships throughout my career, and many times I’ve benefited greatly from those connections, whether it’s a referral or helping to secure a shoot location. The further I progress through my career, the more I’ve needed those people I worked within the past. And like the great philosopher, KRS-ONE once said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Don’t chase the money. Master your craft. If you master your craft, the money will come.”
