Exploring Life & Business with Gian Calderon of Flaky’s Popsicles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gian Calderon.

Hi Gian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our journey began in January 2021 when I was 13 years old. I got tired of playing video games all day and having to ask my parents for money when I wanted to go out with friends. I needed a job, but the only problem is that I am too young to work legally. The idea of attending events and serving guests delicious sweets as desserts was already on the market. Until one day, I was enjoying a lollipop and everything clicked. My imagination ran wild when the newly purchased business line was born. The spark of an idea where I can be hired at any event or meeting, to sell popsicles with the addition of personalized toppings that the client wants. It’s like having your personal ice cream man right outside your backyard! I followed the idea with my parents and instantly approved and supported the start of my new business. After weeks of research and business needs, we were finally ready to start operating Flaky’s Popsicles. My parents supported me financially by lending to me, as long as I was committed to the business on a consistent basis. Once everything was up and running, I knew I needed to put a name for the business. I could have taken the easy route and just named it “Gian’s Popsicles”, but I decided to step out of the box for this one. Throughout my entire life, my known cute nickname has been Flakys (Flaa-keys) also known as Flaco in Spanish which translates to cute skinny boy in English. Like Big Al ‘or Little Jimmy. So I decided to use my childhood nickname to honor and retain the name of a new business. I am now known around the world as Flakys and I hope my entire community can know my name as we are happily ready to serve any and all of our delicious popsicles.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a business, it’s hard to say we have not come across any struggles throughout our journey. Our first challenge came across when we did our very first event back in the summer. I was all excited to finally get to work after a month and weeks of anticipation. Unfortunately, as we were driving to the first event our popsicle cart was broken as it was traveling in the back of my dad’s car. As we were unloading the cart, we see the incident and noticed all the popsicles are melted minutes before the event starts. My dad in this situation taught me to adapt to what we had and finish out the event strong. Another one of my struggles with this business is transportation. Since I am still a minor, I still tend to struggle with minor issues like not having the ability to drive. So, I truly depend off my parents and siblings to give melifts over to events and help me to go buy any supplies needed for my events. But, as a family we organize each other to succeed in any way we can

We’ve been impressed with Flaky’s Popsicles, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
This business is not just me, my family has helped me a lot throughout this journey. What sets me apart as a business owner is that not many people are doing what I do to earn my hard-earned money.

“My dreams are BIG 🤩🙏💪🏼 and I have many goals for this business. My second popsicle car will be out in 2022 and my goals is to be able to give younger people like me the opportunity to work with me to be able to work in something fun and be able to earn their own money and be of service that is my biggest dream than I have for my great Flakys Popsicle. “

What makes me most proud is reaching 1,000 followers on Instagram and seeing how far I’ve come in just a few months starting in late July. I know that I could not have done all of this without the help and support of my family.

What matters most to you?
My family as a whole matter to me and even then I know I need them for whatever to come in our bright future as business. As well as customer satisfaction. I believe the customer or client deserves to have a great big smile after doing business with us. Having their guests feel safe and treat them with care and excellency is our top priority at Flaky’s Popsicle.
