Meet GinaMarie Xocal of XOCAL XBQINI

Today we’d like to introduce you to GinaMarie Xocal.

Hi GinaMarie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my serial entrepreneurship journey after resigning from many years of long commutes and corporate success, eight years in finance and 10 in technology. One day I realized how far I was from an actual C-Suite promotion and becoming the CEO of the business I was giving my life to. I spent 12-hour shifts behind my laptop, dreaming of the beach and wishing I could enjoy it more often. When it was suggested by my supervisor that moving away from the beach and closer to my place of employment was the “smarter” choice for my career, I quit my job. I began living the lifestyle I wished for on the weekends. I participated in San Diego Art shows, I supported our local reggae music scene, I learned hands-on cannabis cultivation and production, I went to the beach all day! I also began to build business around my unique talents and passions. I became a personal trainer for women, I cleaned houses, sold art, started resume writing and job coaching and creating cannabis skincare products. I remember thinking this is great but I cannot do this alone. Multiple hustles was very demanding and my focus needed to be sharp if I was to be successful in developing a full-fledged brand. So I began to hire and mentor women as honed in on the work that gave me the most satisfaction, sun care and the beach lifestyle and then BOOM!! XOCAL was born!

XOCAL is a California lifestyle brand that offers fashion and skincare featuring the cannabis plant. I am a cannabis advocate and educator who firmly believes in the power of all plants! As a mother of six children and three on the spectrum, I know firsthand what the benefits of nature can have on the quality of life for those with special needs. Promoting the world’s most amazing plant in everything I do is my way of sharing the truth about how cannabis can improve the lives of all those who choose to try it. It is another way to give back the positive impact it had on me and my children.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
After seven years of grinding away at XOCAL, maintaining brand consistency in 2020-2021 has been my biggest challenge to say the least! I had to cancelled my plans to create an event space for people to gather (XOCAL CBD Café) mid-project due to quarantine and shutdowns, then quickly pivoted to launch a body-positive swimwear line in winter… in the middle of the pandemic. I am fortunate that XBQINI is off to an inspiring start. We are building a positive community of consumers and empowering women of all shapes, sizes and colors by offering swim fashion in honest sizes (small through XXXL) and featuring real bodies and women we all can relate too!

This was the brand consistency I needed to stay motivated and bring something positive out of an unprecedented time of pandemic and world doubt. But it wasn’t easy, as manufacturers were operating at minimal capacity and my small business was being put off for larger clientele. The formulation lab I was working with also delayed research and development on my long-awaited skincare line due to the overwhelming need for hand sanitizer, which became the priority over my projects. I wondered at times if I would ever finish what I started and if the world would ever go back to normal? I was discouraged but I never gave up! I continued to evolve and go with the flow, finding new ways to stay in the game. No matter what was up next, I always tried adhere to my core beliefs and my brand message and to stay humble while remembering why I started. That was probably the best decision I made in 2020.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about XOCAL XBQINI?
XOCAL also goes hand and hand with diversity, inclusion and female empowerment. Woman-owned, operated and endorsed! I incorporate an array of women professionals in every one of my projects, from photographers, video photographers, models, brand ambassadors, marketing specialists, cannabis educators, scientists, formulation labs etc. I inquire who and what the businesses are I work with. I believe it’s the brand owner’s responsibility to provide a sound product or service while being ethical and fair. That includes hiring, building and purchasing goods from businesses that are diverse and inclusive.

During research and development of all our merchandise, I remain ultimately motivated to create products I would want to use and made by someone I would do business with. Sustainability, ethical practices, and quality products for an honest price are in XOCAL’s developmental DNA. I am proud to say that when XOCAL re-launches its skincare line, it will be at the highest level of clean beauty standards. A standard set by the cosmetic industry that I am excited to fuse together with my cannabis cosmetic formulations. The long-awaited reformulated skincare line has been over two years in the making. I can’t wait to have you try it!
