Exploring Life and Business with Greg Orfe of Driftline

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Orfe, Co-Founder & Creative Director of Driftline.

Hi Greg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Wes and I have been best friends and business partners for quite some time now. We roomed together all four years throughout college after first meeting at Elon University and started our professional careers in different cities after graduating (Wes in NYC, Greg in DC). Coincidentally though, we both moved out to San Diego in 2015 and dove headfirst into everything the city had to offer – with watersports and the outdoors as our primary source of fun.

Wes happened to grow up surfing since he was young back on the East Coast, and I quickly picked up it up while also being a kayak tour guide in La Jolla. One day before an early morning surf session, we had that ‘aha’ moment where we realized the water was too cold for boardshorts but too warm for a wetsuit… and voila! The concept for Drifties™ was born – a 2-in-1 boardshorts that provides watersport athletes with a patent-pending 0.5mm neoprene inner lining connected to a stylish outer shell.

Since we last connected with SDVoyager (May 2019), we had just launched and were excited for our future. Well, after two years of product testing, customer feedback, long days and sleepless nights, we’re at a really great moment for the Driftline brand and can’t wait for what’s to come. We’ve built a unique product that is here to stay within the watersport apparel marketplace and have experienced incredible growth through a loyal customer base who truly believe in our product. We’re proud to have a big part of that fanbase here in San Diego as well! We can’t wait to show everyone what else we have in store.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Driftline started off as a passion project for Wes and I, and it certainly still is – but we’ve definitely experienced our fair share of challenges and life lessons so far. We both still have full-time jobs outside of Driftline, so managing those – while learning how to run an apparel startup – has led to some bumps in the road that have taught us so much. Whether it’s determining how customer sizes work, the ins-and-outs of our supply chain, or figuring out how to scale properly, we’re at least lucky to be a team where one’s weakness is the other’s strength, and vice versa.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Driftline launched in May 2019 and creates innovative activewear built for maximum performance in any watersport. Our products aim to fill a void in aquatic apparel by giving you the right gear to conquer the water with comfort. Drifties™ – our primary product – are a 2-in-1 boardshorts that provides watersport athletes with a patent-pending 0.5mm neoprene inner lining connected to a stylish outer shell. Unlike regular compression liners, Drifties are specifically designed for watersport usage by offering warmth, comfort, and chafe protection.

As a two-person team just starting our 3rd year in business, we’re so excited to see how much our customers have connected to our brand and our products. We’ve built up a loyal following of customers who are always excited to rep our gear and root us on from wherever they are. This excitement drives us and our desire to keep innovating, and there’s so much more we have in store for the future.
