Meet Honest Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Honest Skin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We started Honest Skin with a big leap of faith- opening up during the middle of the pandemic. We were two esthy-besties who ate vegan food, geeked out on skincare, and loved Jesus. Even better- we both had the vision to make quality skincare accessible to everyone. We started dreaming up a simplified menu, researching other devices and techniques that our market wasn’t already saturated with and leaned on each other and our friends and family for encouragement along the way. We opened after the second shutdown was lifted on our industry, starting in small single suite inside a Sola Salon in Bay Park. We alternated the days that we worked out of that space. We quickly realized that we were booking up and were capped at the number of clients we could fit into one week, so we started dreaming up a bigger space again.

Shortly after that, a good friend of ours mentioned there was a space that she thought we might be interested in. We found it perfect because it was literally down the street from our first suite, so our clients wouldn’t have to go far! There were also multiple rooms so that we could each take more clients and also get to work at the same time again (yay!). So in another leap of faith, we said YES and moved to our current location! We would definitely say that the “HOW” behind where we are at today is God. We believe our connections, opportunities, and success have all been because of the Big Guy upstairs! We’ve also been blessed with the most supportive Honest Community of clients, family and friends. They are a reminder of why we do what we do and who we do it for every day!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge was navigating the effects that the Covid shutdowns had on our industry. We decided in July of 2020 that we wanted to create Honest Skin, which was in the middle of the 2nd shutdown for personal care services. We took advantage of this time shut down to really refine the details of our business- the devices we used, products, decor, etc. We wanted to make sure we were ready whenever the shutdown was lifted.

Lots of prayers, blood, sweat, and tears went into getting our space ready to take clients, but in September 2020, we were finally able to open. Shortly after, we were told that our industry had to shut down for the 3rd time. Sola Salons provided us the choice to stay open or shut our doors. With much deliberation and even more careful care towards disinfecting and sanitizing, we made the decision to stay open. We served our clients based on their personal comfort level on the social distancing spectrum. All in all, we stretched our ability to meet the needs of our community inside and out of the treatment room.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re both from San Diego, so we totally get it when it comes to wanting to practice self-care but on a San Diego budget. Let’s be real. Living here can get expensive. So we wanted to bridge the gap and make skincare services more affordable and accessible.

We’re proud of the companies we’ve partnered with that share in the same vision that have helped us establish our business. Together, we’ve created three core treatments that serve your skin in all stages of life. We didn’t want to exhaust or confuse our clients with an overly saturated menu of services; or digress from our specialty, which is skin. Our clients know what we’re good at— we didn’t want to be the jack of all trades. We believe in standing by what we’re good at— and getting better at it every day. Because the skin is so intricate— Not to mention skin being the largest organ, it deserves our complete devotion to learning its complexities.

What are your plans for the future?
We are dreaming big— we want Honest Skin locations up and down the California Coast, bringing our vision for skincare accessibility to life.

We are big on changing the “exclusivity” aspect in the skincare world. Especially because we’re just two regular women that love skincare. We want your treatments to be comfortably integrated into your lifestyle rather than feeling like an annual “treat” that you get to splurge on. Because in reality, you won’t see real change at that point. Consistency is gold.
