Exploring Life and Business with Kara Lee of The Well Community for Women

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Lee.

Hi Kara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, I’m Kara Lee. I am originally from Houston Texas and have lived in San Diego for a little over 5 years. I am married to Logan and mom to Lydia, Levi and Lukas. I have a degree in Vocal Music and am very much a creative. In my creative world- I have sung, danced, acted, directed, produced and written- but I had never considered starting a business until I met my partner for The Well Community for Women Kristen and I met in the middle of the Chick-fil-A play place in fall of 2018. We sat down on the bench together for some adult conversation and watched our children play. As it turned out, we were both born and raised in Houston, Texas and had some other hilarious commonalities.

Kristen presented me with the idea for The Well at our next Chick-fil-A hang. We began to dream of this place that was perfect for mothers, and would also seek to help women in need.

The past three years have been filled with ups and downs and the word “roller coaster” sits at the top of our vocabulary list. Today, it is incredibly rewarding to walk into The Well and see all that we set out to do, we’ve accomplished. Our first location, pre-Covid was downtown at Moniker Warehouse. It was a beautiful location, but the parking proved to be a challenge. We went virtual for all of 2020 and reopened in Grossmont Center in February of 2021. The new location is beautiful and has ample parking and safety.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Building The Well has never been easy, but the team of people around us- our donors, volunteers, and staff have made it possible. As a nonprofit- finances have always been the hardest part for us. There are months that we look at each other and just shrug, “Well, if it’s meant to be, we’ll be open tomorrow.” We’re still here, and we’re growing. Every day, a new face walks in and leaves so happy. It makes all the hard days worth it when another woman becomes a part of this thriving community.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Well Community for Women. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Well is a community for women that offers workspace, special events, support groups, and more- all with an inclusive kids’ program, The Little Wellies. The mission of The Well is to draw women out of isolation and into community.

The Well is a safe space for women and the perfect place to gather together and find the support women need. The community that’s forming is really beautiful, and the women who are coming each day are not just coming for work, they’re coming for friendship- for themselves and their children. Each afternoon, there are always tears when the kids have to leave. They are having so much fun, and the mom guilt is completely erased as women realize they are getting so much work done and their child is in kid heaven.

The Well’s workspace is open from Monday to Thursday, 9:00-1:00, and every Friday at 10:00, there is a very engaging mommy and me event. Follow us to find out what other exciting things we offer each week or to book our space for your own special event!

The Well is a 501c3 nonprofit that partners with eight other nonprofits in the San Diego area helping women transition out of traumatic life situations. Groups that have helped support women leaving sex trafficking, crisis pregnancy, domestic violence, and homelessness can find a place to belong here. The women coming to The Well from a nonprofit partner come on scholarship through our donors. You can feel great about a membership at The Well because every dollar goes right back into our community to help women get a fresh start.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
We have great plans of building Wells in many new cities! We often hear, “I need one!!” when we tell our friends in other places about The Well. We have ongoing conversations in Idaho (where Kristen just relocated), Houston, San Antonio, Birmingham, and Orange County about potential expansion.

We believe every city in America needs a Well!
