Exploring Life and Business with Joann Schaub of Schaub Insurance Agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joann Schaub.

Joann, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a second-generation insurance “nerd.” My father had been a long-time insurance underwriter, and I started in the industry on purpose (most people fall into the industry and then stay in). I got my start in 2003 with a large national direct writer. From there, I went to an independent insurance agency and have been in the independent insurance agency world ever since. I have worked at a small independent agency, large national brokerages, to eventually opening up my own agency in April 2017. Being an independent agent means we have the ability to work with multiple carriers to find the best fit for a specific client or account. Our primary focus in the agency is in business / commercial insurance, but we do write preferred home/auto on a referral basis. I was a long-time single mom for many years and put myself through college – literally on the 10-year college plan. I started at Palomar College in Fall 1998 when my daughter was three, got my AA, transferred to CSUSM, and graduated with a four-year degree in Spring 2008.

In the insurance industry, I have kept my focus on learning and growing by earning several industry designations such as a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), and Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR). When I launched my agency, I wanted to change the feel from being new business/sales driven to customer service driven. I also wanted to give back to our community, so every month, we honor a designated charity and donate a portion of all commissions generated in that month (from both new and renewal business) to that charity. A list of the charities can be found on my website (about us). The idea is to continue to grow and as my agency grows, so do my contributions!! I process the donations on “Giving Tuesday” the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to maximize the impact with matching funds, etc. Having been raised by a single dad and going through financial hardships at various times in my life, I wanted to create a culture that gives back not only financially but with time too. I have volunteered with Meals on Wheels (through our local Rotary chapter) and have volunteered many times (and organized some volunteer events) with the North County Food Bank.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have definitely faced some challenges, from being a single mom to becoming a local business owner. I have always wanted to set an example for my daughters to be strong independent women. We participate in social causes, and I want my girls to be empathetic to the larger world around them. I want them to be compassionate.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are very customer service-focused. We give back to the community. I have the experience to meet any challenges head-on – both as a hands-on agent and with education at my side. We focus on business insurance for the manufacturing, distributor, technology, restaurant, and contractor industries. The coverages we write are general liability, commercial property, workers compensation, commercial auto, cyber liability, employment practices liability, professional liability, and more! We are also a preferred vendor for several venues for their special event/wedding insurance needs. On the personal lines side, I write coverage for preferred home and auto (no tickets/accidents/claims) packages, along with an umbrella, landlord, and renters policies.

I genuinely love what I do and solving problems! I love to provide education to my clients and never oversell. I always promise to be open and honest, and I will tell you what I think you need to insure now and what we can plan to insure down the road (i.e. increasing limits or adding policies). I will always look for ways to add value.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family. They are my everything. Giving back. It’s part of who I am.
