Meet Kat Smith of The Craft Browery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Smith.

Hi Kat, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Craft Browery has quite the history. It all started back when I was a child, I didn’t have a name for it then but I had a lot of anxiety. In middle school, I developed trichotillomania – a type of coping mechanism that results in hair pulling – and my eyebrows suffered. For ten years, I dealt with the embarrassment of having no brows, constantly filling them in with makeup and then rubbing it off again when I would pull.

Then I discovered permanent makeup. It took me a while to decide to take the plunge, but once I did, it was LIFE CHANGING. I was so impressed with how my quality of life had improved; I knew that I had to provide this experience for as many others as I could. It ignited a passion in me that I had been waiting for all my life. I signed up for a permanent makeup brow course in my area and studied intently, determined to make this my new full-time job.

Unfortunately, two weeks after I had graduated my training, COVID hit. Trying to launch a service business during a pandemic was extremely demotivating. But I kept trying to advance my knowledge with the downtime, adding saline tattoo lightening and tooth gems to my service menu.

In January of this year, I decided to jump-start my business efforts and give it 150% once we re-opened. Now I am running The Craft Browery successfully. I just launched my online tooth gem training program The Art of Tooth Gems, and had my first event experience at the San Diego Vegan and Holistic Pop-up where I brought my mobile tooth gem station.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Besides Covid? It has been anything but smooth! Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. I was fortunate to be able to keep my full-time job throughout Covid – I went to college for Computer Science and I am a software engineer 40 hours a week. Unfortunately, that leaves me with one day in my salon to serve my clients and one day off to do laundry and keep my sanity. Saying it’s really tough balancing basically two full-time jobs is an understatement. As the saying goes, I have both a 9-5 and a 5-9. But, I’m determined to make it work and grow my empire on the side.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Craft Browery?
The Craft Browery is my permanent makeup and tooth gem business currently operating out of Afterglo Beauty Lounge in La Mesa. I offer ombre powder brows, combination brows, saline tattoo lightening, and tooth gems – something for everyone!

I’m probably most well known for my tooth gems, but I absolutely love doing brows! Ombre powder brows are the crowd favorite – they’re so versatile – they can be soft and natural or heavy like a carved-out makeup look. They’re my favorite because I get to bond with my client over the 2.5 hours that they’re in my chair. I make friends with so many of my clients. I can’t help it; they’re all so cool!

I also have an online tooth gem training program – The Art of Tooth Gems – that I created to help other entrepreneurial spirits start their own side hustle. There’s enough room for us all to win in this world, and I’m here to help others make that happen!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I am a member of Sheila Bella’s Pretty Rich Bosses mentorship program, and I don’t think I would be where I am today without the help of the many coaches in that program, but especially my personal coach @victoria.glam
