Meet Kiana Joy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiana Joy.

Kiana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with fitness started at the age of five, when I first started playing basketball. Throughout my childhood, I played various sports, but my nutrition wasn’t quite there. My weight fluctuated often and as I got older, I kind of fell off from fitness. It wasn’t until I visited Indie Yoga in Ocean Beach when the flame caught again. My sister, Camilla Jade, introduced me to the world of Hot Yoga. I went weekly and was instantly hooked. Initially, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life and tried various different jobs. Eventually, I found myself in Guam, where I was able to compete, train, and teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 2019, I decided to make the leap, and I got certified through ACE. Due to the pandemic, I came back to my home, San Diego, in 2020 and started my own Personal Training business. At the start, I worked at a few different gyms and loved training and teaching both bodybuilding and soul cycle. At the end of the year, I found myself drawn more toward the world of powerlifting. I compete for the first time this year and am excited to be a part of the community. Currently, I personally train and run my business out of a gym in Point Loma called S10Fitness. My journey has just begun, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting your own business is never easy. It has its ups and downs, I recall a time where I had three different jobs just to support my dream. The good always outweighs the bad and a lot of Personal Training comes from time and hands-on experience. It’s about finding the proper mentors to guide you in the direction you’re looking to go. I was lucky enough to find a facility with brilliant trainers who focus on the field of neurology. I learn new things on how to not only help myself but others on a day-to-day basis. Having a good support team and communication is key to any form of growth.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Personal Trainer that specializes in Sports Nutrition. I love teaching people about MACROS and proper portion sizes. I would describe my coaching style as Power Building. Compound movements are by far my favorite, but my heart can’t let go of Hypertrophy! Usually, a session with me starts off with some mobility warm-ups, followed by a compound, and ending with hypertrophy accessories.

I love encouraging people to start their journey due to the extra endorphin boost it provides! One of the reasons I started my journey was because I was battling with severe depression and anxiety. I tried pharmaceuticals prescribed to me but personally thought it wasn’t really the best fit. I offer and introduce natural boosts of happiness through physical exercise, and honestly, nothing brings me more joy.
