Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristyna Martin.
Hi Kristyna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m originally from Czech Republic, where I had my own floral business, but after planning my friend’s wedding, I knew wedding planning was my destiny. I decided to change my career path to wedding planning and gain as much know-how as possible. One day I made a terrifying but also exciting decision to close my floral business and gain international experience.
When I first arrived to the US, I worked as an Aupair in Minnesota and at the same time, I did an internship with a wedding planning company to improve my English and learn about the wedding industry in the US. After a year in Minnesota, I moved to San Diego, where I started studying international business and did internships with a different wedding planner. I also worked as catering manager for a lead catering company in San Diego which allowed me to see the wedding process from the venue and catering viewpoint. Then I started working with a florist who started from nothing and built up a successful business. And seeing that gave me the courage to branch out on my own. And since then, I have seen growth every year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting my own business in a different country was scary. Even though I already had years of experience I had to build my own portfolio, create marketing strategies and talk to potential clients. Although I became fluent in English, I do speak with an accent. I was worry that could be off-putting to potential clients.
One of the struggles was making the financial commitment to advertise. I was afraid I was going to commit to spending all this money and not get any business. For the first couple of months, I was paying for advertising and not getting any clients; thankfully that soon changed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a wedding planner. I bringing my international style, design, and passion for creating unique weddings to San Diego and Southern California. Wedding day is a celebration and my mission is to make wedding planning enjoyable and stress-free from the beginning to the end. I created a wedding planning document that allows the process to be organized and run smoothly. Every couple is unique and I love to listen to their love stories to create personalized wedding designs and experiences. My main focus is on communication, detail, and personal touch.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I worked with Jennifer from I do Flowers for You, who started her business from nothing and became quite successful. When I started talking about how I want to start my own wedding planning business, she encouraged me and gave me great advice and shared how she made her business successful. And we still today share ideas on ways to grow our businesses and become more successful. My husband is my biggest cheerleader and has supported every business decision I made every step of the way. He is someone I can bounce ideas off.
