Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa McDonald.
Hi Marissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My interest in Nutrition began when I left the United States Marine Corps.
I was, at that time, working as a security contractor in Kabul, Afghanistan. Given the location and nature of work, there were little to no healthy options when it came to food or anything else really. I was fed up with food poisoning and the overall lack of regard for health, and I decided to stop eating meat and focus on fruits, vegetables, and grains instead. When I made this decision, I was nearing the end of my employment contract for that position. I knew once I made it back to the states, I would be have everything I needed to make that decision a lifestyle.
After a few years of being stateside, I was heavily involved in the CrossFit community as an athlete and Level I Coach. I often found myself giving advice on nutrition and fitness to friends and family. I decided to enroll in Working Against Gravity’s Coach Certification Course. Working Against Gravity is a well-known Nutrition Coaching platform in the CrossFit and USA Weightlifting communities. I jumped at the opportunity to learn from them.
Once I finished the course, I launched my business, and the rest is history!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road as a business owner. As with life in general, there have been peaks and valleys when it comes to steady success.
Finding clients who are serious about their goals and serious about making lifestyle changes isn’t easy. We’ve been programmed to expect instant results, but the look of hard work and consistency is not appealing among the masses.
Another struggle is staying true to your own uniqueness as a person and business owner. You can often feel tempted to look at what appears to be success for someone else and imitate what they’ve done. When you do that, you become the salt that has lost its savor. You become weak and watered down. There is no longer a spark separating you from everyone else. I work every day to silence the white noise of social media and stay true to what it is I am looking to provide as a Coach. I have to remain confident that the right people will find me, or I will find them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a Certified Nutrition Coach, and I specialize in helping people make nutrition lifestyle changes. I also help athletes who are already set in specific training fields (CrossFit, Weightlifting, Running, Swimming, etc.) accomplish their goals.
I teach a macronutrient and micronutrient-based program that focuses on nutrient-dense whole foods eating. I work with clients to help them cut out as much processed food as possible in their everyday life. However, I also encourage not cutting out what you love to eat. This can sound contradicting, but you can still eat what you love in moderation and/or find a new way to cook it.
What set’s me apart from others is my 1-on-1 virtual coaching style. I make my program convenient to my client based on his or her exact needs. I make myself available to them in any way they need me to be. This has proven to be the most successful thing I can do for them in order for them to achieve their goals.
I am proud of the way I can bend and schedule my own life to meet the needs of my clients. I am proud of the compassion, knowledge, and expectation I bring to the table. I am honest and real with everyone I work with. I don’t just write a prescription and walk away. I work through their obstacles with them, week by week.
I want people to know that there are real tangible solutions to holistic health. It’s not just about what you eat or how much you work out. It’s about your support system, your sleep, your job, the personal time you take for yourself, and anything negative that may be affecting you. Success to me is peace. Success is fulfillment of the little things in life. Tears from someone who has been trying to lose 10 pounds for 10 years or someone who can finally sleep at night, helping someone achieve their goal. That gives me peace and fulfillment.
