Exploring Life & Business with Samantha Eastburn of SUP Pups

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Eastburn.

Hi Samantha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I owe the love of the water to my Dad, when I was a little girl I was blessed with a childhood of going to the lake every weekend in the Summer, being on the water gave me this amazing feeling of serenity. Growing up I also had this deep love for animals, especially dogs. I begged my mom for my own dog when I was in elementary school. Then after graduating college I knew I had to move closer to the water, I was always drawn to San Diego, visiting Campland by the Bay every year growing up with my family.

Once I moved to California with my rescue dog Jack in 2014 after graduation, the hunt for a job on the water began. San Diego Bay Adventures on Harbor Island gave me the opportunity to learn all about Water Sports Tourism, I was in my element. Then on my off day, I took out Jack on a paddle board and we instantly fell in love. The idea of SUP Pups was born and I finally felt like I had a purpose on earth, to give people the opportunity to find serenity on the water with their dog like I did with Jack.

Now 7 years later, SUP Pups has developed into a successful career once partnering up with West Coast Paddle Sports. Taking out thousands of dogs and their owners, seeing their eyes light up with this new found passion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting up a business is not easy, but so rewarding. A lot of clients look at me and say, “WOW! You have the best job ever!” and yes they are correct but the stress of everything that goes behind of growing a successful company can weigh on you.

Technology changes every day, especially social media and learning all the business legalities can be challenging. I am still working on how to ask for help, how to work on time management and still find time for Jack and myself.

But every time I get on the water, I take a moment and remind myself how these little obstacles and challenges are so worth it. That no matter what happens, like when a Rottweiler decided to eat my paddle boards, it is all a learning lesson, it makes your stronger and wiser down the road (or in my case, down the Liberty Station Waterway Channel)

For the most part, SUP Pups has had a pretty easy road because of the support I have with my businesses I have partnered with and the love I have from Clients who keep wanting to come back, share their experience with others and tell me what an amazing thing I have here at SUP Pups.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SUP Pups?
SUP Pups is a paddle board company that specializes in teaching you how to SUP with your Pup. Starting off with private lessons for you and your dog, teaching you the basics, safety and technique of the sport while educating you the best way to introduce your dog to the board. Every dog will have a different experience depending on their personality, fears and anxiety. But with the specialized and experienced technique, I am able to give these dogs comfort knowing they will be ok, and the owner their confidence taking their dog out on the water. I have been running SUP Pups solely by myself, some people don’t even remember my name, but simply know me as the SUP Pups Girl. I am proud to say as well that I do not know many people that do what I do and I am so blessed that I have been able to build this amazing reputation in San Diego, not only just teaching people but gaining valuable friendships along the way.

My brand and reputation is what I am most proud of. That I am able to give someone all the knowledge they need to paddle out safely with their dog, but also help them obtain their own equipment and know the best boards, how to transport their equipment. My pure happiness is when I see an old client reach out to purchase their own board, and then see them set out on the water regularly with their pup!

Not only do I offer the private lessons, help you get your own equipment set up, but I also love to have a little fun with social events like Dog birthday parties, Holiday paddles and Donating lessons!

I love giving back to the pup community and I found an amazing way by taking out people who are fostering an adoptable dog, capture the adventure and help share their story so they have a better chance finding their forever home.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
If you do not take a risk in the beginning then you will never know what could be. So if I was too scared to even start SUP Pups then I absolutely would not be where I am today. My whole life I kind have been that type of person who just jumps into something without weighing the costs, and just letting it ride. With the love and support I have around me, I just always have a feeling that everything will work out in the end.

For example, January 1, 2021 I made the full decision to take SUP Pups all on my own and develop this amazing program into my whole hearted business. I took a risk by investing my own money without any loans to move forward with SUP Pups future. I also needed a vehicle for the paddle board business, so without any research I just went to the dealership and 7 hours later, traded in my jeep for a big, brand new chevy express van. Yes my payments are astronomical, but in the end I knew it is exactly what I needed to make SUP Pups successful. Plus I absolutely love my van.

Taking a Risk is life, and if you do not do that, then you are going to live a scared, unfulfilled life. Yes you might be more stressed out, you might be overwhelmed, but it is so worth it in the end and if it doesn’t go as planned, then you take it as a lesson learned and move on.
