Exploring Life & Business with Sylvanah McMahan of Beauty by Vanah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvanah McMahan.

Sylvanah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I first started doing lashes as a side hustle back in 2018. I was working at a car dealership full time then I would come home after work and do lashes every day. Then one day I decided to take a leap of faith and quit my full-time job to go to esthetician school to get licensed and add more services on to my menu. I love self-care and getting my lashes done and wanted to make other women feel beautiful too. Also being a young single mom, I wanted a more flexible schedule and wanted to be able to be my own boss and make my own schedule so I could spend more time with my daughter. I wanted to be able to work less and make more money. I graduated from the city college esthetician program in August 2019 and then got my license in January 2020. I was home base for a long time and that was part of the reason why I wanted to take my business more serious and get licensed so I could open up my own suite and stop working from home. Once I got enough clients, I decided to open up shop and I found the perfect suite in Hillcrest. The location is perfect and very central. I’ve been working from my suite since December 2021 and I absolutely love it. I currently offer eyelash extensions, and brow, and waxing services. I am also offering training for eyelash extensions because I want other women to be able to boss up and work for themselves too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There were a lot of late nights and early mornings being in school full time, and lashing after all while being a mom 24/7. then I had just gotten my esthetician license in January 2020, the pandemic started before I could open up shop. I wasn’t able to work for several months. I lost some motivation during that time. The whole point of me going to esthetician school was to be able to open up my own suite and offer more services. The pandemic definitely slowed me down a bit but didn’t stop me from accomplishing my goals.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed esthetician. The main service I offer is eyelash extensions. I have 4 years of lashing experience. I also offer eyebrow lamination and waxing services. At the end of this month, I will also be offering training for eyelash extensions. It is a great business to get into if you have a passion for beauty and want to be your own boss. I always tell people there are over a million people in San Diego, there are enough clients for everyone. I also sell aftercare kits for eyelash extensions. What sets me apart from others is I really want you to enjoy coming to get your services done. Self-care is extremely important to me. I want you to leave me feeling refreshed and beautiful. Not only am I a full-time lash tech but I’d like to consider myself a part-time therapist. My clients just need someone to vent to sometimes, life is hard and we just need a listening ear once in a while. Not only are you opening your eyes to beautiful lashes, you get to blow off some steam. Or just getting a good nap in, either way, it’s a win-win.

Any big plans?
My main plan for the future is just being able to train other women to do lashes so they can be their own boss and work as much as they want to. I would also like to grow my wax clientele because I have a big passion for hair removal. I also just want to finish up school. I have a few more classes to take to get my associate of science esthetician business Administration degree from city college. I plan to be done by spring 2023.
