Exploring Life & Business with Tal Moore of Franklin’s Popcorn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tal Moore.

Hi Tal, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My parents emigrated from Israel a few years before I was born in Brooklyn, NY.

We lived in government-subsidized housing on the outskirts of Coney Island. Dad drove a cab, mom worked at a dog grooming salon. After a few years in New York, we relocated to Los Angeles.

I discovered a knack for business at 12 when I started selling gumballs to friends at school. Within a few weeks, I was earning $10-$12/day, well on my way towards early retirement.

I worked a bunch of odd jobs throughout high school – Taco Bell, delivering pizzas, waiting tables, buying/selling used cars.

I started a bubble gum machine vending route while in college which ultimately led to launching, a gumball and candy machine e-commerce website. I invested all of my time and savings into the business, regularly putting in 100-hour weeks. grew to become one of the largest online vending machine retailers in the world at the time.

I sold a few years later. Along the way, I launched several other online businesses including,,,, and Franklin’s Popcorn.

The popcorn business is my main focus these days.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My business/ life journey has been anything but smooth. By 2015, my life was in shambles both personally and professionally. I had just ended a serious relationship that left me heartbroken and lost. Meanwhile, my business was losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. I needed to regroup and start over. I moved back to the west coast and started rebuilding my life, one day at a time. I prioritized my mental health through meditation and therapy. I hired a life coach. I started building a safe home for myself. I reached out to my network of close friends and family for support. And I started turning my business around by focusing on new product development and marketing.

We caught a break during COVID. All of my products- sanitizing wipes, make at home popcorn, and outdoor security systems- were in high demand during those bleak days and months. We could barely keep product in stock.

After a record turnaround, I ended up selling my outdoor security business, Guardline Security, in Jun 2020.

As you know, we’re big fans of Franklin’s Popcorn. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Franklin’s Popcorn supplies authentic movie theater popcorn which you can cook up at home. We sell pre-measured packs that include everything you need: organic popping corn, butter-flavored salt, butter flavored coconut oil. Our popcorn is legitimately delicious. You’ll never go back to bagged or microwavable popcorn once you’ve tried Franklin’s.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I salsa dance. I’m mediocre at best, however. But I do enjoy dancing!
