Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamra Coviello.
Hi Tamra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my design career in the flooring construction industry and quickly became the lead designer and Showroom Manager. I specialized in Kitchen & Bath Design but longed to design the entire home. I was contributing to many of my clients’ remodeling projects by offering my design expertise.
I broke out on my own in 2018 as a full-service interior design firm and have implemented a vegan and sustainably-minded design philosophy. My team’s philosophy is to curate our Timeless Modern design while delivering a luxurious, healthy, and eco-friendly home.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Yes and no. I was lucky enough to have my first client that loved my vision for their home in Solana Beach and allowed me to implement it. At this point, I was juggling a full-time job and expanding my color consulting services to full-service design. What a leap! For a year and a half, I was working seven days a week and sleeping 3 hours a night. But it was worth it!
The completion of this first luxury project produced beautiful images that I could use to market my services in the area online. I have been fortunate enough to grow and add great people to my client list and team, adding a junior designer and a marketing manager. The pandemic was an unexpected turning point for the business that allowed me to sharpen my processes and provide a fun and luxurious experience. I was able to connect with people on a meaningful level despite being socially distanced. I fell deeper in love with my creative industry and it reminded me that building relationship is why I love design.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Blackdoor Design by Tamra Coviello is a full-service, vegan, sustainable interior design firm. I’ve coined my unique design vision as “Timeless Modern Design,” a subtle, adaptable, and outlasting design with a mid-century aesthetic at its core. Color, textures, and juxtaposing elements all come together to celebrate the heritage of my clients and allow the foundation of the home to shine to its fullest potential. I’m not afraid of color and I love creating memorable homes! I don’t reuse materials (you won’t see the same drapery or pillows, etc. in any two designs), and I have great relationships with workrooms that make custom pieces for my clients. My team and I offer 3D renderings, CAD drawings, and consulting with architects and contractors to ensure the custom design is executed at the highest quality.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
COVID-19 upped my tech game! I implemented software programs that allow me to interact with clients outside of their homes, which in turn, allowed me to take clients all across the country!
Additionally, the relationship between the client and their home became very important to nurture even more now. It reminded me of how important the functionality of a home and the psychology of color are.
