Exploring Life & Business with Wendy Sterling of The Divorce Rehab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Sterling.

Hi Wendy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For 20+ years, I worked for a variety of Corporate America businesses in a sales, client services, and consultative leadership role. I have always been a people person – someone who loves to build relationships with others, among others and most importantly, network. Something I was really good at was empowering others to be their own decision-makers. At the time, I did not know I could make a living doing JUST THAT! I grew up in San Francisco and moved to Southern California to attend UCLA, where I met my now ex-husband freshman year. Together, we graduated, built our careers and had two amazing children together. Very unexpectedly in the summer of 2016, my entire “married with children” life came crashing down – my 16-year marriage to my college sweetheart fell apart, my children were struggling with why mommy and daddy don’t live together anymore, my mother was diagnosed with cancer and that is just the tip of the iceberg! Fast forward to almost four years ago when I discovered coaching or really when coaching gave me the tools I needed to look ahead, not back, and become a stronger, more independent and badass version of me. I am the example that creating a new life during and post-divorce IS POSSIBLE – and finding a new path to create a life you choose vs feeling stuck with can be done! I help women of divorce find the lessons and silver linings in everything; change their mindset to “things happen for me” vs. thinking “things happen to me.”

My true heartfelt mission is to help divorced women who feel lost and stuck find their true power and authentic voice using my transformative Divorce Rehab 5-Step proprietary method. I help newly divorced men and women, who are having trouble moving forward and tired of feeling stuck, pain, fear, resentment, anger, and guilt to find joy, self-worth and freedom.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road has been bumpy with many forks in the road. However, it has been incredibly invigorating, freeing and yet frightening which then turns into excitement. When I really think about my career and the positions I have held, I was always an entrepreneur working in Corporate America. I’ve helped build businesses in regions companies haven’t had a voice or a very small one – and grew them to multi-million dollar businesses. I knew I could do the same for myself and am proud to say I am actually doing it! It is the most incredible experience to build something that is mine and as a legacy for my children. It gives me goosebumps when I think about it! However, that is not to say that I have not stumbled along my path.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned over the last year is it isn’t about why you fall down; it is about finding the strength to rise and get back up. However long it takes. And embracing the beauty from the ground, the rubble of rock bottom. Strength comes from bulldozing the rubble and building from scratch. I live by these following words of Brene Brown: “Rising strong after a fall is how we cultivate wholeheartedness in our lives; it’s the process that teaches us the most about who we are.” Amen! I’ve learned more about myself through the trauma of divorce – and how to use it to become the best version of me while living my passion to help others going through similar experiences.

Oh wow, so many things come to mind! I think the biggest piece of advice I would give myself is to really dance and be more present in each moment as well as lean in more to things that scare me because that is where true growth happens. I didn’t learn that lesson until five years ago when I made the decision to leave Corporate America for entrepreneurship and become an international divorce recovery coach full time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Divorce Rehab©?
I help divorced women at any stage who feel stuck and lost to find their true power and authentic voice as they navigate their new life post divorce. My goal is to guide my clients in finding hope and a new sense of self as well as cultivating community with renewed happiness, courage, grace and compassion. As a mom going through a divorce as well as an accredited life coach, I help my clients see they too may come out on the other side stronger, braver, happier and a role model to their kids – I am proof! I work with my clients to embrace all aspects of the divorce process, acknowledge where they are at, sit with them in those places and honor who they are and want to be. Through my 5-step coaching roadmap, women move through the emotion and impact of divorce more quickly to create a life they choose instead of the one they feel stuck in.

I am most proud of a few things: First, being a full-time “mompreneur” while rebranding and re-marketing my coaching business to focus on my passion of working with divorced women, and secondly passing all of my coaching certification exams in under 1.5 years! I’ve also led multiple workshops where in just one hour I have seen women’s mindsets transform before my eyes! It is incredibly rewarding and I think I get more from working with my clients than they do!

What sets me apart is that I have transparently lived the path so many divorced women are experiencing. While my story is unique and mine, I’ve found the foundation of trauma is the same across the board. It is still a ‘death’ of sorts and the mourning process is different for all. But the stages are the same. It is like a roller coaster and the path of the car is different for us all! I know what it’s like to ride a version of it and created a program for others that I know will help – because it changed my life and did so more quickly. I know what it takes – accountability and tough love. Without it, many stay stuck. That is why my programs are designed to move women quickly and at a pace all their own.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I believe women are well-positioned to do whatever they set their minds to which translates into greatness! I think so often our own minds get in the way and I would like to see a flip in our thinking about what is truly possible. We live in a world where we so easily soak in judgment from others and seek approval from the outside. I would love to see more women have the self-confidence to know other’s opinions of them are none of their business (Rachel Hollis said something similar in her book Girl, Wash Your Face) and to have enough self-love to know you are more than enough. In turn, anything is possible and opportunities are endless!
