Meet William Zakrajshek of OutAt

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Zakrajshek.

Hi William, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to San Diego in 2005 and quickly was pulled into nightlife in Hillcrest, working at The Flame, Numbers and Rich’s as a barback. Soon after moving here, the 2008 recession hit and an opportunity to learn how to DJ from one of Hillcrest’s top DJ’s started me on a new path. I quickly learned I had an ear for music and became one of the top LGBTQ+ Top 40/Hip Hop DJs in San Diego, giving people a beat to dance to for over a decade.

Being in nightlife allowed me to meet influential community members, which would help the progression of Out at the Fair®. In 2011, a group of friends and myself went to the San Diego County Fair but noticed a huge lack of LGBTQ+ awareness or inclusion at the Fair. After the first year, the San Diego County Fair heard about our unofficial event and welcomed us to the Fair. Within a few years, the festival would become an official Fair event and grow to nine locations in three states by 2019. Making Out at the Fair® the official, award-winning LGBTQ+ festival of the Fair industry focusing on family-friendly entertainment, education, and inclusion.

While preparing for our 2020 Fair season, like most businesses, we were hit with a curveball. With all festival locations postponed until 2022 now but having a community of talent looking for an outlet, a new platform was born. In August of 2020, we launched OutAt.TV a free Streaming + TV platform focusing on LGBTQ+ entertainment/music available today on Apple TV, Roku TV and Amazon FireTV. This free streaming platform has quickly grown in the last ten months and is now streaming to 79+ countries around the world. Not only do we stream podcasts/shows, OutAt.TV has allowed us to launch OutAt.TV Music with over 60+ LGBTQ+ artists streaming their music videos from 10 pm – 10 am (pst) nightly and more are being added daily. But with the focus of helping the full community OutAt.TV has allowed us to help bring virtual Pride Celebrations online from Long Island to Sacramento for Pride month 2021.

With the quick growth of OutAt.TV it allowed us to rebrand our nightlife app “NowTrending app” into “OutAt app,” putting on-demand TV/Streaming content in the palm of your hand, trending event information, links to Out at the Fair® and more. These changes have allowed us to see the full view of the “OutAt” brand with new brands, new events, and new partnerships coming in the future.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It for sure hasn’t been a smooth road to get to where we are today, and I wouldn’t expect for them to stop today. From people in the fair industry saying, “We just don’t have community members in our county,” or showing we have a value to sponsor beyond a general Fair. It is what you do when these struggles happen which makes you the business you are today. Instead of tossing the towel when my DJ career faded away from CV19, all the Out at the Fair® locations being postponed, nightlife app needing a new life, you just pivot and try to see your businesses in a new light.

As you know, we’re big fans of OutAt. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
OutAt Inc. is our newest creation from the pandemic and is in the final stages. This new corp will manage the “OutAt” brands, including OutAt.TV, OutAt app, and Out at the Fair®. OutAt Inc specializes in bringing equality through broadcasting, festivals, events, TV, and Digital media. We are excited because there is no other LGBTQ+ business like us, allowing us to do something new for our community that was never possible before.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We are always looking for more LGBTQ+ talent, shows, podcasts, musicians, and more. Just visit OutattheFair.com or OutAt.TV to see how you can join.
