Hidden Gems: Meet Alejandro and Alejandra Gomez Ruelas of Mi Pan Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro and Alejandra Gomez Ruelas.

Hi Alejandro and Alejandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been fascinated with the art of artisan bread. The idea of baking with natural ingredients really stands out to me. But I never really had the time or reason to pursue that interest until Covid came around. After losing my culinary job of nearly ten years due to the pandemic last year, I was torn between making a career change or pursuing a long-time dream of owning a small business. Both were equally as scary, but I decided to follow my gut instinct and give baking a try.

It all started with Banana Bread (our best-seller). I’d stay up all night trying different recipes — throwing away burned or unflavored batches — until I finally found a recipe that fulfilled the rich and moist texture I was aiming for. We’d let our friends and family try our most recent creation, only to find ourselves fulfilling orders almost on a weekly basis!

The amount of support and reassurance we received was overwhelming, but I was only inspired to continue learning and crafting quality bread. Since then, we’ve expanded our menu to include sourdough, brioche, babka, and a handful of other seasonal items. What started out as a quarantine hobby ended up as a passion of mine.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of our biggest challenges as a team/partners were getting used to each other’s working styles. My wife and I both tend to have Type A personalities, especially when it comes to the kitchen and learning to adapt to each other’s organizational styles really created stress and unnecessary tension. After spending about 12-15 hours in the kitchen together a couple of times a week, we finally found a rhythm that worked for us. In the end, we are just both as passionate and protective of Mi Pan.
