Hidden Gems: Meet Angela Stanger and Sonya Gomez of Plant Based Meals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Stanger and Sonya Gomez.

Hi Angela and Sonya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Plant-Based Meals is San Diego’s only whole food, plant-based meal prep company. We deliver fresh, ready-to-eat meals right to your door! We, Angela Stanger and Sonya Gomez, are the founders of PBM. In 2018, we met working together during a transitional period of our lives -this was kismet. Angela had just graduated from UCSD in the field of chemistry and engineering, and Sonya was ready to pivot from a career in mental health, a field in which she holds her Master’s Degree. Right away, we connected as strong, independent women.

We soon found out we had passions and goals that were aligned. We both wanted to be independent, help others from all walks of life, and have a positive impact on the planet. Within a few months, we met for our first business meeting. With our goals in mind, to create a company that would bring people joy and improves their lives, we asked ourselves- what is better than making insanely delicious food that is healthy for you and the planet?

That is how Plant-Based Meals (PBM) was born, and we have always stayed committed to this mission. Not only do we provide a service to bring San Diego residents a convenient way to get tasty, whole food meals, but we also do grassroots campaigns to feed seniors, first responders, and homeless people.

Over the past year and a half, we have partnered with leading healthcare professionals from Scripps, UCSD, and Sharp who see the value behind cooking with our health standards, which include never cooking with added oils or sugars. PBM is a whole-food, plant-based (WFPB) meal prep company, which means we create mouthwatering dishes centered on whole, unrefined, and unprocessed foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds are the basis of our satisfying meals. Dr. Angie Nieson proclaims, “I have found you a local meal delivery I can stand behind!!”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have definitely experienced our fair share of obstacles while starting PBM and continue to face them as we grow. Our first delivery was in February 2020, right before COVID hit. As with any new business owner, the uncertainties of starting a new business can be overwhelming on their own. With COVID, the uncertainties magnified as we, like the rest of the world, did not know what was to come of this global pandemic. To our surprise, the Stay at Home Order helped our business, as many of our customers wanted to limit the amount of time spent at grocery stores. They had our healthy meals delivered to them instead.

The obstacles that followed were different than initially expected. We then had to face challenges that come with business expansion: finding a large commercial kitchen to cook and store our supplies, finding people to work with us, finding the food we needed for meals as the supply chain was disrupted, adjusting the ordering process to have a more user-friendly experience for our customers, and more. Fortunately, we had much help and support along the way. Friends connected us with the people we needed to properly expand our company, neighbors helped us find a commercial kitchen to work out of, and loved ones continue to provide advice and unconditional support.

As you know, we’re big fans of Plant-Based Meals. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Plant-Based Meals is San Diego’s number one whole food, plant-based meal prep company that delivers fresh, ready-to-eat meals every Monday evening. We are a local, woman and minority-owned business that strongly believes in giving back to our community. We prioritize diversifying our workforce and donating meals to those in need.

What differentiates us from others is our unwavering commitment to quality. Because all of our meals are made from scratch, we are in complete control of our ingredients and never have to compromise on taste. We source from local, organic vendors whenever possible and never use added oils or sugars.

We are proudest of creating healthy, delicious, and nourishing meals that help our clients achieve their daily nutritional goals while enjoying every bite. Our meal choices change weekly as we create new recipes – and we love the appreciative comments we get from satisfied customers. We are changing the image of plant-based eating one person at a time.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
ANGELA: I grew up in San Francisco and was raised with my older sister by an amazing single mother. She taught us important values, not to judge others, be kind, do the right thing and put a large emphasis on school work and volunteering.

I am so thankful for these lessons because they have shaped my life to be full of love and service to others. I am most proud of my many accomplishments centered around my years of volunteer work, which comes from my love of animals. For the last two years, I have been the adoption coordinator for Lionel’s Legacy Senior Dog Rescue. Nothing makes me happier than finding these deserving animals a safe forever home. I will always be that little girl willing to learn and experiment and bring joy to others.

SONYA: I was a responsible child while growing up. I didn’t give in to peer pressure very easily and had a willful approach to life. I was definitely a dreamer and philosopher from an early age and had huge curiosity about and interest in human behavior.

Questions such as, “Love is such a beautiful feeling. Can it last forever?” or “If we all decided to let go of resentment and anger, wouldn’t this world be a better place?” were typically floating through my mind.

Being born and raised in San Diego, I loved soaking in the sunshine and admiring sunsets at the beach! My high school was two blocks from the beach, so my friends and I were there very often. Of course, I cannot forget to mention my love for pop artists such as Nsync and Britney!
