Hidden Gems: Meet Audrey Lyons of Salty Beach Tan Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Audrey Lyons.

Hi Audrey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began spray tanning right out of high school (eight years ago, crazy!) in a super small town just north of Seattle, WA. I was completely self-taught and built my business on my own with no guidance. For many years it was just something that I did on the side in a spare bedroom of my house! It truly was my passion then and still is to this day.

After several years, I was really starting to outgrow my small town and knew that myself and my business had so much more potential. That’s when I started brainstorming ways to expand and move on.

It wasn’t until the pandemic hit and I got laid off from my full time job as a flight attendant that I decided to up and move to San Diego and follow my dream of spray tanning full time, in a busy place. I knew absolutely no one and completely started over, it was just the challenge that I needed. I opened Salty Beach Tan Bar in October 2020 and since then it has grown tremendously thanks to the best community and clients ever.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but well worth it! A few struggles that I have faced are just trying to navigate life as a completely self-taught business owner (there is so much more to running things than giving a spray tan!), time management, second guessing if I am making the right decisions, and at one point trying to balance three jobs including spray tanning… I have really learned how to follow my gut and intuition when it comes to many things. I must have done something right though!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Salty Beach Tan Bar we offer custom airbrush tanning along with body contouring and now in studio teeth whitening. Custom meaning that we create the perfect solution mix for each client based on their individual skin tone along with how dark they want to be. I also take pride in the fact that we don’t use any spray tan solutions that have unsafe chemicals and are that they are full of organic ingredients.

What sets us apart from others I would personally have to say is our attention to detail, years of experience, and how we strive to really make personal connections and friendships with our clients. Along with that- we go the extra mile to really educate our clients on how to best care for and maintain their tans. We want them to love their bronze from beginning to end and keep seeing them time and time again.

Our studio is a super fun, beachy, and laid back. We set the atmosphere with great music and awesome conversations. My favorite thing about it though: all of the beautiful glowing people that leave happy!

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The sunless industry has done nothing but grow over the past several years so I can only imagine how much more it will over the next 5-10! As people become more educated on the negative effects of the sun and the damage that it causes, they turn to the safest alternative to achieve tanned skin which is sunless tanning.

It’s a really exciting thing to be part of! I fully believe that spray tanning will completely take over and will be much more common than it already is.
