Hidden Gems: Meet Dr. Matthew Perry of Auto-Ness Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Matthew Perry.

Hi Dr. Perry, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After more than a decade of ice hockey, rugby and weightlifting, I started experiencing leg pain in my early twenties. The MRI wasn’t looking good. “Matthew, I don’t know how to tell you this, but you have two herniated disks in your back,” his doctor said.

The guidance that followed was almost worse: No more strenuous activity. The resulting devastation and persistent pain inspired me to pursue a career in physical therapy, eventually opening Auto-Ness Physical Therapy in June of 2019.

My goal today is to teach my patients that they are not broken, empower them to know that an MRI or X-Ray does not mean that they are doomed to a life of misery and that they may very well be able to resolve their pain. As a physical therapist I’ve also found that patients may also be able to avoid surgery simply by changing their body mechanics through physical therapy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a difficult road. We are non-traditional Physical Therapists who spend the entire session with each of our patients. We are performing an alternative form of healthcare that is patient-centered and compassionate. This really differs from the typical medical model of care, where you only spend 5-10 minutes with your healthcare professional. We have received a lot of blowback from other people in our profession that this model “cannot work”. Patient-by-patient we are proving “them” wrong.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Auto-Ness Physical Therapy?
We specialize in One-on-One Physical Therapy that puts our patients at the center of healthcare. We employ a hands-on and manual therapy and functional movement approach to treat the entire body and will work with a patient for an hour or more obtaining better results and reducing the number of treatment appointments required for patients to meet their goals. Every area of the body is interconnected with another area of the body. An example: When your shoulder hurts, we work on the entire “system” of the body related to the shoulder in order to ensure optimal movement at all joints in the upper body.
