Hidden Gems: Meet Elizabeth Stoelker of Poised For Flight School of Aerial Yoga and Arts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Stoelker.

Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When my son started kindergarten, I found myself a little lost and I began to look for ways to get active and to meet some other women. Having a gymnastics and cheerleading background, I was excited when I found aerial yoga. After my first class, I was hooked! They challenged me and left me feeling strong and accomplished. It was something I did just for me. I began going to classes regularly and it wasn’t long before I was training to become a certified instructor myself! Having this window into the world of yoga had me so intrigued and I wanted to learn more. I enrolled in a 200-hour yoga teacher training program and became a certified yoga instructor. This training changed my entire approach as an aerial instructor. I now knew that aerial yoga could be hugely beneficial to far more folks than just ex-gymnast types. This stuff was for everybody! I began searching for ways to reach a wider audience and to provide them with a more holistic experience. During the pandemic, I had so many colleagues and friends take online courses to become certified to teach aerial. I knew in my heart that I could provide a much more comprehensive training program that anything online ever could. With the guidance and encouragement of my teachers and mentors, I developed my very own curriculum. My dream is to provide the most holistic, comprehensive aerial yoga and arts teacher training program available. I hope to make this incredible practice accessible to people of all ages, genders, shapes and sizes! Anyone looking to take their practice to new heights!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle I have faced since becoming an aerial yoga instructor is convincing people that they can do it! So many people have an idea of what aerial is in their mind and they assume it will be difficult. They don’t understand how beneficial this practice really is. Inversions alone can help stimulate the flow of blood and synovial fluid as well as decompress the spine to alleviate back pain. The silk supports up to 50% of your weight putting less pressure on your joints and making challenging poses more accessible. My personal favorite benefit of aerial is the assistance it gives your lymphatic system. The silk holds us at different acupressure points stimulating our body’s natural healing properties and helping us detox. I hope everyone gets to experience these benefits at some point!

As you know, we’re big fans of Poised For Flight School of Aerial Yoga and Arts. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Poised for Flight fuses elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine with ancient yoga for a uniquely holistic experience. Instructors who graduate from this program will have a working knowledge of subtle and gross anatomy, acupoints and how they relate to the lymphatic system, safety and rigging techniques. Along with a plethora of poses they will spend hours practicing Poised for Flight’s unique methodology to help them organize their classes based on their students’ needs. Our main goal is to make aerial accessible to everyone in the community. I am honored to be able to share my passion and offer healing to all who wish to receive it!
