Hidden Gems: Meet Fernan Sunglao of GÜDMÜDFÜD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernan Sunglao.

Hi Fernan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey everyone!

My name’s Fernan Sunglao born and raised here in San Diego. I am Filipino-American and was raised in the community of Paradise Hills. Community and family were always a big part of my life which stems from my love of food and bringing people together through hospitality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely had my share of tough times. Being furloughed for the first time made me change my mindset and sparked a drive in me to pursue my vision. As for business, we’re still fairly new to the scene so we always feel like we can do better whether it’s from a creative standpoint or improving our service. We’re definitely learning as we’re growing but it’s been an amazing process and I wouldn’t change it.

As you know, we’re big fans of GÜDMÜDFÜD. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the co-creator of GÜDMÜDFÜD. GÜDMÜDFÜD is a food project turned into our own food brand where we do pop-up events and private events. We started this concept last year during the pandemic as the hospitality industry got hit hard and many of us were furloughed or laid off. Being away from the kitchen and not being able to work in a restaurant setting made me realize how much I love cooking and creating food. It killed me to not be able to be doing my passion but opened up room for creativity and growth when it came to my food. My partner in GÜDMÜDFÜD is Inno Paraman who is a very talented chef/baker and was my fellow co-worker.

We started this project from the inspiration of others in the community hustling during the pandemic and felt like it was a good time to showcase our food via pop-up events to share our menus to our community. Our specialty is street fusion food but we like to elevate and make our dishes unique which is what we strive for. A couple of signature dishes we’re known for is our Ube Milk Bun Burger, Birria styled Fried Bun Bao, Pork Rib Adobo Fries, and Ube Philly Cheesesteak. What makes me proud is the progress we made from 9 months ago from being an idea, not knowing if our food was worthy and to see where we’re taking our food and vision now. It’s rewarding to gain of the support we get from our community which drives us to keep going harder. We also do a lot of collaborations with local businesses to make our events more special and to showcase other local brands. Stay tuned for our future events and what local businesses we’ll be working with soon. We’re also available for private events as well.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned during this journey is to never sell yourself short meaning to always strive for what your passion is and go all the way with it because you never know what opportunities can be presented to you.
