Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Mai & Lina Mai. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Joseph grew up in San Diego. Since graduating college in 2004 till 2016, he has started several businesses in several industries such as software, sports industry, and the automotive industry. Some were more successful than others but that gave him the experiences and life lesson on how to build a company from the ground up with the proper infrastructures.
Lina grew up in San Jose and started her cosmetology journey in her junior year of high school. After high school, she went on to pursue her career as a hairstylist. She has worked with independent salons, franchise salons, and started her own salon in CA and Florida. Lina always had a dream to create a salon where all stylists are treated like family with opportunity for growth.
Joseph & Lina:
Joseph and Lina met in 2015 and were married in 2016. With both their entrepreneurial spirit and business experience, they opened their first eyelash Salon called LashBar™ at the end of 2016. They franchised LashBar™ in January of 2018 and have grown their franchise to 15 locations in California and Arizona. They have plans to scale nationwide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing a thriving franchise has its rewards and drawbacks. We quickly learned that growing a franchise is not only about the services and structures, it is also about the people in the business. Learning how to work with each individual franchise partner and their goals was very important in theirs and our success.
Since franchising in 2018, we opened our first 5 locations in our first year. In 2019, we quickly realized that we needed to solidify our foundation in order to scale our vision of growth. In 2020, we opened 2 new locations ion March 15th and was forced to close a week later due to the pandemic. Because we spent 2019 creating a great foundation and culture for LashBar™, as a company we were able to make it through the pandemic with no closures. In fact, in 2021, when we were able to reopen our business, we were able to thrive with record numbers and have now tripled our location count to 15 locations.

LashBar™ was founded as an artist brand. We knew that in order to grow into a successful business, we not only had to have great guest service but also have great lash stylists who love their work and our brand as their own. We made it a focus to create a career for our stylists and not just a job. We are one of the only beauty brands that offer a 401k and a career ladder for our stylists. From a lash stylist to a manager, to a trainer, and eventually a franchise owner. We have successfully self-funded several of our stylists to become their own boss and opened their own LashBar™.
As a Lash Salon, we offer high-end luxury and quality services for everyone. We focus purely on lashes which mean we have perfected it to become experts in the industry. We are innovators in the industry creating patents and one-of-a-kind products exclusively to LashBar™.
We are currently franchising in all 50 US states.
