Hidden Gems: Meet Kelli Horton of Horton Realty Team

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Horton.

Hi Kelli, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved to San Diego from Phoenix in August of 2015 because I knew if I didn’t take a risk in my life and make myself uncomfortable, I wouldn’t ever progress to my full potential. I moved to SD with nothing… no job, friends, family, and definitely no plan. I landed in El Cajon, and the property I was currently renting a room in allowed me to accidentally fall into property management. The owner instructed me to rent out the other rooms, run credit checks and background reports, and in return, I could live there rent-free.

I did that in El Cajon, then picked up another one of his properties in Scripps Ranch, and then before I knew it, I was a property manager on accident. Then I figured why not get my real estate license and see where this little part-time thing could go, so come May 2016, I was a licensed Realtor! August 2016 is when I moved in with (my now husband) Bryan Horton, who is also a licensed Realtor.

2017 – I did a few deals here and there, maybe 5-6.
2018 – I joined one of the top teams in San Diego and won Rookie of the Year for Big Block Realty, closing around 25-27+ deals that year, and bought my first home in October of 2018! (This year is also when I convinced Bryan to drop his desk job and get licensed too!)

Bryan and I stayed on this team for a few years, then fast forward to 2020 in the middle of a pandemic, my husband and I branched out and started our own thing… Horton Realty Team! We also got married in October 2020, honeymooned in St. Lucia and Miami, and are expecting our first baby girl in August of 2021.

Within six years, I got licensed as a Realtor, met my husband, convinced him to get licensed too, own a home with three amazing dogs, got married, and now expecting my first child in August 2021. It’s crazy! Things really do work out if you TRY and work hard. It’s awesome, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for us and our new team, Horton Realty Team, and our new baby soon! What a wild ride it’s been, but I definitely wouldn’t change anything. 🙂

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first moved to SD, I was broke, honestly. Eating PBJs on the floor, crying all the time, wondering what the heck was I doing just moving to a random city by myself with no one and no help. Even after I got licensed in 2016, the very next year was the hardest. Not closing deals, questioning all my decisions, wondering if a sales career was really for me… it was ROUGH!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Horton Realty Team?
My husband and I started Horton Realty Team to really throw a wrench in this old-school industry. We’re young, technical, innovative, and we love to befriend all of our clients on all social platforms! Seems crazy, but we bring the HUMAN approach back to real estate!

We don’t just throw you on an automated San Diego property search or stick a For Sale sign in your yard. We come with tenacity and work our hardest to achieve results even we didn’t think were possible. We aren’t the salesy type either. We’ll never rush you into a sale you aren’t comfortable with or convince you to buy a San Diego property you hate. NO WAY!

One last thing… you won’t catch us telling you what you want to hear. We keep it real and what you see is what you really get. The San Diego home buying or San Diego home selling process can tend to get a little overwhelming, and we’re bringing you a straight-up, no catch type of work ethic that is both fun and informative along the way! We know the feeling of working with an unethical, dishonest, greedy type of agent, which is why we strive to be 100% different. We listen to your needs, we care about you and your family, we develop a curated plan of action JUST FOR YOU, and of course… we’ll never waste your time!

With all of the new technology available today, buying or selling a home is much different than it was even just five years ago. Apps, virtual tours, 3D walk-throughs, and social media are what both San Diego buyers and sellers are frequently turning to now for resources… am I right?!

On the Horton Realty Team, we fully embrace all of these methods and use them to establish and develop a personal relationship with all of our clients like… we love connecting with clients on a personal, fun level. Let’s get real for a second, most people cringe at the thought of having to learn new technologies, but we embrace it and love to learn! We are always wanting to try new things and leverage new technologies to benefit our clients. We are constantly evaluating the San Diego housing market, our current processes and strive to innovate and improve every way we can!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
New agents… call us! We’re always looking for the next best agents to join our team! As far as networking, what worked well for me, I studied what the big fish in the industry were doing and implemented it for myself and the team. Why reinvent the wheel when you can copy it? Honestly. Sounds crazy, but so many agents try to do the exact same way, but different for some reason. How about just doing what works?! 🙂
