Hidden Gems: Meet Mike Sill of Sunday Scaries

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Sill.

Hi Mike, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Sunday Scaries are a funny thing. (That’s funny, “odd,” not funny “funny). Why? Because everybody from your grandmammy to your Great Dane has dealt with them and yet nobody talks about it.

For us, it was the stress of trying to run our local SD bar & grill, open a second, and live a little in whatever free time was left at the end of our long days. Simply put, it was stressful as hell. That’s when we were introduced to CBD.

The more we asked around, the more we found out everybody has their own version of that story. School, work, relationships, simply waking up in the morning; the scaries comes in all shapes and sizes—and any day of the week, too. We’ve all got our own battles, but that shouldn’t mean we have to fight them alone. This is life, not a Rambo movie.

Sunday Scaries was founded to de-stigmatize (and overcome) stress —one person at a time. Call us crazy (lots of people have), but we believe everybody deserves a hand on a difficult day and a fair shot at a Scarefree life. That’s exactly what we provide—with laughter, with CBD, and any other way we can.

Beau Schmitt and I started Sunday Scaries because of how overwhelmed we both felt in our personal and professional lives. Personally, we missed out on a ton of vacations, weddings, and social gatherings because we were grinding ourselves to the bone and shackled to our work. Even with the time that we did take off from work, we were so consumed by the pressure to succeed that we were never able to enjoy the moment with family and friends. We have both lost loved ones to mental health issues and we know what it’s like ourselves to feel alone.

Professionally, we have suffered many hardships together as business partners. The entrepreneurial road is not a smooth one and while we’ve gained thick alligator skin in the process, there are still times where we may feel overwhelmed or frustrated. We realize that running Sunday Scaries is not only helping others overcome their self-doubt, but it also gives us a higher purpose to be the best versions of ourselves. We truly care about the success of this company and the Scary Squad as a whole. We deal with stress too, it sucks. So we’re devoted to creating a community around de-stigmatizing it and encouraging transformation, and we’re going to have some fun doing it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Haha, nope. Being an entrepreneur is like a riding on a roller coaster for the first time. The highs are highs and the lows are lows, meanwhile, you’re moving at rapid speed towards an unknown finish line. Everything rests on your shoulders and it can feel incredibly isolating. The stress levels are high and monitoring your mental health is a must.

Struggles with the CBD industry:
Payment Processing: We need to pay high-risk processing fees and many processors or banks will drop us at a moment’s notice, without warning.

Banking: Banks will accept our money in checking and savings accounts but will not extend us loans or lines of credit.

Marketing: All of the traditional advertising platforms dislike us. From Facebook to Google to You-Name-It. We can’t openly state we’re CBD so the customer’s intent to buy is low. We’re always wearing a cloak we don’t want to wear.

Overcrowding: The CBD industry has between 2,500 and 3,500 companies, up from 35 when we first started the company in 2017. It’s overly saturated because of the low barrier to entry and the tsunami of e-commerce entrepreneurs.

Regulation: We’re still waiting on the FDA to clearly classify our products and set regulatory and compliance standards for the industry as a whole.

Manufacturing: Many credible and well-established manufacturing facilities won’t take on CBD products because they don’t want to jeopardize their core competency, which means the manufacturing sector of the CBD industry is nascent as well, not just the commercializing brands.

Entrepreneurship is tough in general, even without these hurdles.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sunday Scaries is a CBD e-commerce company on a mission to transform a worrisome nation into a chill one. We’re known for sensationalized edible products that are extremely efficacious and help our community destress. We sell delicious CBD gummies, Vegan CBD gummies, CBD candy, CBD tincture, CBD sleep oil and more.

There is a ton of noise out there. Now everyone and their milkman have a CBD company. ‘Medi-this’ and ‘canna-that’ companies are a dime a dozen. It takes experience to see through the clutter and purchase from those who are transparent and legit. We’re tearing through the noise. If you’re anything like us, then your mornings might be consumed with negative thoughts. You might be overthinking about a first date or unnecessarily nervous about a deadline. You might not be able to sleep because your mind races so much at bedtime. Don’t worry; you’re not alone. We’re not perfect and we don’t pretend to be. But we’re the feisty, bold antihero you’ve been looking for to help you eliminate your self-doubt.
