Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Mabrey.
Hi Olivia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was young, my most beloved hobbies have been heavily tactile. I grew up a multi-instrumentalist who loved playing music, knitting, sewing, writing, and creating multimedia art. Working with my hands has long been my most cherished form of therapy. Inevitably, my obsession with art, language, and all-things-manual led me to obtain a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting at Northeastern University. Upon graduating, I knew I had struck career gold – I’d go on to provide linguistic access to the Deaf+ and hard of hearing communities using visual, signed language. It felt as though life had come full circle. My hands were happy. However, as meaningful and passionate I was about the work, it wasn’t long before the creative bug began biting at my ankles.
After many months of careful contemplation, my vision of creating a hand-made jewelry collection that tells unique, personal stories came to fruition. I started my jewelry business in 2018 while working full-time as an Educational ASL Interpreter. My daily life was as follows:
• 7a-3p: Interpret at the elementary school
• 3:30p: Dash home to fulfill a handful of Etsy orders rush to the post office before close at 5p
• 5p-midnight: map out more jewelry concepts, photograph them, build up my online storefront on Etsy.
• Rinse and repeat
It was absolute madness, yes. I barely left my house for one year, and sleep was limited. Every moment outside of my day job was spent building up my online shop with unique listings that the Etsy world hadn’t yet seen. Initially, one sale per week was my goal. Within that first year, my Etsy income surpassed my salary as an ASL Interpreter, and I had seven best-selling items on the platform. I have since moved on from interpreting and currently run my Etsy shop full-time as a one-woman show. Looking back, I’ve made immense sacrifices, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Building my own business has allowed my passion and eye for design to re-emerge, all while bringing color, elegance, and beauty to the world of jewelry in a fresh new light.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a female entrepreneur with absolutely zero background in business, there’s been much to learn. The shop has grown tremendously in three years, leading to greater responsibility and more work to manage on my own. My current focus is mastering time management and incorporating healthier work-life boundaries. This is especially challenging when you run the business out of your bedroom closet and don’t have anyone reminding you to take breaks every once in a while.
Much of being a shop owner and artist has come to me intuitively, but I do face challenges from time to time. It’s just part of the gig.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I collaborate with buyers to create handcrafted and personalized family keepsake jewelry to represent their loved ones. Every bracelet and necklace showcases a stunning selection of personalized gemstones for each member in your family or friend circle. Sometimes pets are included, too! The options are endless.
All gems securely centered on a dainty but durable chain in your preferred length and metal finish. Every single item is made to order. All gemstones used in my designs are natural, genuine, and uniquely freeform in shape – no two gems are the same. With over 30 unique gemstone options to choose from, this necklace makes the perfect gift for just about anyone. Do you have a big family? No problem! My top-selling necklace can be made with up to 22 birthstones to represent each and every person nearest and dearest to you.
Quality craftswomanship, customer happiness, and commitment to transparency are paramount. Everything you see in my Etsy shop has been designed independently, including every piece of jewelry, all listing photos, and my logo. I handcraft every order and shoot every photo at my home in San Diego, California.
