Hidden Gems: Meet Rudy Johnson of RJ Estate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Johnson.

Hi Rudy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a realtor here in California for seven years. I have had my mortgage license for two years and my solar license for four years. I started off as a professional athlete playing football in the CFL and Arena. After a couple of years of being cut and traded from one team to another, my Grandma recommended I looked into studying for the real estate exam.

My mom used to tell me how I was always intrigued by real estate and entrepreneurship. At seven years of age, I would ask my mom what a mortgage is and if she can explain how I can own a home. So, real estate was always an idea that played in the back of my mind growing up.

Fast forward into 2013, I decided to take my Grandma’s advice on that recommendation and I received my real estate license. I didn’t really start taking real estate serious until around 2018. Throughout my first five years, I would sell 3-7 deals per year during the off season; while I continued to play football in season. Then, my life changed when I found out I was having my first child in 2018. Prior to having my first child, I used to work full-time while I was selling real estate on the side until I could save enough money to try out for a NFL or CFL team. But, I knew this hustle would not sustain raising my daughter and my reality set in.

So, in 2019 I went back to my full-time job to ask for a raise. My job at the time was with a small developing business, where I would work with scheduling appointments for clients interested in installing solar or requesting construction repairs. This was a great job opportunity because it was allowed to sell real estate on the weekend. But, it wasn’t enough to make ends meet.

Fortunately, the universe worked its magic and I was fired from the job right before my daughter was born. This was the best thing that ever happened to me because it forced me to focus on my business full-time and leave it all on the line. Shortly after I was fired, the pandemic happened and I was forced to either sink or swim. I decided to swim! During the pandemic, I was able to get my mortgage license. So I was earning income from 3 different real estate fields (Solar, Loans, and Real Estate). In 2020 I was awarded top 5 % realtor in San Diego and now in 2021, I will be awarded top 1% realtor here in San Diego.

We’ve been impressed with RJ Estate, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Football was always my favorite childhood memory. Football has been a major part of my life and still is today. Our Balboa Raider Pop-warner team was the first in San Diego to win a National Championship. My college team for Winston Salem State University was ranked the number one HBCU in the nation in 2013. I was also awarded first-team Division All American Quarterback that year as well.
