Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Mondet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mondet.

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
For me, this start-up business adventure with Picnic by Nature has the feel of something that is both well-practiced and completely new. It’s a construct that’s been building within me for a long time through love for fine aesthetics, close connection, and delicious foods. I was born and raised in Europe, and in Germany, we have this word Gemütlichkeit – it’s tough to give a direct translation. Still, essentially it expresses a feeling of extreme coziness, content, and the warmth of friendship. It is this feeling which I hope to impart to customers who experience a Picnic by Nature. While pursuing my master’s degree, I backpacked around the world for a few years and was lucky enough to end up in beautiful San Diego about a year and a half ago. I basically started at zero when I moved to California, and it felt – without much to lose – like the perfect moment to start my own business. I was always a wanderer, a hippie at heart, one who loved to escape city life at every chance and breathe in nature’s beauty while enjoying good company & great food. The idea to combine these elements and share them with others really sparked a passion in me, so I started offering unique and intimate picnic experiences with a bohemian ambiance inspired by travel and faraway places.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a new business on your own is notoriously rocky, even more so when you’re in unfamiliar territory. It also has a great potency for teaching many lessons in a very short amount of time. I knew I wanted to create something that allows people to experience nature in a seamless way with great quality, comfort, and pleasing aesthetics. Having just moved to the United States, however, I had to wait until I could legally work to really get things going. I spent the first half of the year researching, gathering supplies & inventory, and creating my website in preparation. Laying the groundwork ahead of time gave me the edge I needed to jump over other obstacles that arose once operations got underway. Working through the ups and downs of a new venture is something I’ve always appreciated and still do. Finding my own way and seeing my visions come to life brings a reward of its own kind, worth every hardship along the journey. Another aspect of this business for which I am quite grateful (and which I did not anticipate) is the constant and nearly overwhelming presence of positive feedback starting from day one. Kind words from people who believed in me, who supported me, and even the little compliments from passersby as I set up the picnics… it really helped me get past my little doubts and reaffirmed my own belief in what I’m doing. Even after so many sessions, seeing the smiles on my customers’ faces and joy in their eyes is absolutely priceless.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Picnic by nature specializes in creating picture-perfect picnics with indulgent grazing platters. We give people an opportunity to enjoy the quality time together with friends, colleagues, and loved ones. It’s a special way to relax and connect with each other while getting away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. The choice to enjoy a moment of beautiful ambiance and closeness with nature creates a certain kind of bliss, and we want our customers to be able to slow down, unwind, and be present with one another. With so many wonderful outdoor spaces to explore, from the well-known to those hidden and tucked away, San Diego was a perfect fit for the launch of Picnic by Nature. Our authentic design pieces are collected from all over the world to create a unique scenery for guests, and we serve grazing platters using only delectable, high-quality ingredients. We take care of all the coordination & logistical efforts, including setup and breakdown, so our customers can focus on relaxing in style and creating magical, long-lasting memories.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think it’s important to gather inspiration from the best of what’s been done before and change & transform a concept with your own imagination. This business depends upon people who have a thrill for creativity and possess a keen eye for details. Finding a way to bring a part of your own essence into the mix will set you apart from what already exists. A sense of quality is key. It truly makes all the difference. A customer will see if you really put thought and attention into what you create or if you throw together some blankets and pillows. It’s important to be aware that whoever books a picnic does it out of love for someone. No matter if the occasion is a proposal, a baby shower, a birthday surprise, or an act of saying thank you… it’s a special occasion and always should be treated as such. Therefore, every picnic deserves to be planned in detail and constructed with love and the best intentions.
