Hidden Gems: Meet Sue Prescott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Prescott.

Hi Sue, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had a passion for entertaining. My friends have long known me as the “go-to person” when they wanted to have an exceptional event. I began pursuing this passion professionally over 27 years ago when I finally began accepting compensation in my own business Sue Prescott Events for doing my favorite thing.

I have a wide array of clients ranging from individuals planning intimate gatherings, coordinating weddings on Catalina Island as a preferred vendor for the Santa Catalina Island Company to running corporate conferences. My full range of services includes venue selection, themes and design of the events, and scheduling and managing vendors and timelines. As a small business owner, I must be my own marketing, sales, and operations department. The previous year has been especially challenging for the hospitality industry and adapting to the ever-changing requirements and uncertainty. Seeking new opportunities and keeping “relevant” have been the greatest challenges. I am a Board Member of the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce and an Ambassador to local businesses for the Chamber.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with everyone in the hospitality industry, 2020 was “0ff the charts” with challenges. Basically, the entire industry was shut down, and all events were postponed/canceled. The catch-phrase most people struggling with the pandemic was “pivot” I did not want to change the nature of my business and frankly was not who I am as a person (Zoom is impersonal and is not the venue where I can display my talents). I am looking forward to getting back to work.

The greatest challenge of my business is finding staff for the events. My company has a strict team mentality, and every person on an event is a member of the TEAM, seeking to make the client’s experience unforgettable and flawless. I feel my job is done correctly when we are unnoticed and everything at the event seems to magically flow on its own. As with all working parents, balance is the greatest struggle. Raising three active children while building my brand, taking calls while at football practice, or cheer events, or play rehearsals takes considerable concentration and understanding from my clients. The success with both (business and family) is equally rewarding.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a sole practitioner, which means I am sales, marketing and operations. My specialty is finding the theme for the event, expanding upon the theme, and bringing it to reality within the client’s budget.

I source most of my product, catering, rentals, props, and outside talent/entertainment. I also seek the best value for the client, which means a balance of price, quality, and the vendor’s ability to be part of the team. Everyone has to be willing to jump in and do whatever is required. My role is managing the chaos, making sure any drama remains behind the scenes and out of the clients’ view. Sue Prescott Events promises to make your event amazing, within your budget, and beyond your and your guest’s expectations.

Any big plans?
I am presently looking to expand my business into rental space for client meetings/event mockups with vendors and storage. This will cut down on my travel and bring my clients to me.

I am looking forward to the weddings rescheduled from 2020 and the new events. I also plan on increasing my corporate work for a meeting and conference planning, working with different properties as they, too, reopen and begin hosting guests. I also plan to be adding a full-time assistant.
