Today we’d like to introduce you to Usha & Srini Gowrishetty.
Hi Usha & Srini, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In the Summer of 2018, one of our friends presented us with the exciting challenge of introducing coding to their two middle school girls.
As seasoned software engineers, we mentored several junior engineers over the years in both big and small tech companies. However, teaching coding concepts to a middle schooler needs a totally different lens.
The whole teaching exercise was both humbling and rewarding. It challenged us and forced us to unlearn things we took for granted and go back to the basics to teach the ways of coding; to the beginner’s mind.
The AHA moments and the smiles we saw during the course were priceless. The transformation we saw in the girls within a few weeks was powerful.
This initial challenge has turned into an opportunity to help other kids who want to embark on their coding journey. So, Bitsy Bytesy was born. It is an online platform assisting kids in discovering their passion for coding.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Building a business around our idea, honing our message, taking it to a larger audience, and building a strong community of parents and teens is a constant source of our challenges and triumphs.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are Usha and Srini, the yin-yang couple behind Bitsy Bytesy. We live in San Diego, California, with our two boys. Bitsy Bytesy is an online platform where kids hone their problem-solving skills, build confidence, and learn to make a difference in the community through learning to code.
What makes us different from others is our mentorship and the unique way we introduce coding concepts, emphasizing computational thinking. Our bite-sized lessons are fun and challenging. We give each kid the individual attention they deserve. We help kids understand the coding constructs behind the applications they use every day.
We believe that learning to code is a foundational skill that all kids need to explore. Coding helps kids:
1) Build resilience.
2) Improve attention to detail.
3) Develop a growth mindset.
4) Go from consumer to creator of technology.
5) Stand out in academics and college applications.
6) Prepare for the future job market.
7) Step into entrepreneurship.
Our proud moments are when we see kids coming into our program with absolutely no coding experience and leaving as confident coders who are motivated to take on the next challenge and ready to create meaningful things with code.
Bitsy Bytesy’s mission is to make it easy for kids 11 and up to start their coding journey by providing them high-quality mentorship and focusing on their success.

How do you think about luck?
We believe in Thomas Jefferson’s quote… “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.”
