Hidden Gems: Meet William Kwak of Keto Krack’d

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Kwak. 

Hi William, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Fresh out of college, I was falling asleep on my first day of work as a litigation consultant, and I drank 6 cups of coffee to make it through the day. I knew something was wrong as I was so tired, had low energy, and couldn’t focus, so I knew I needed to make changes. I realized I had terrible eating and sleeping habits, so I sought out ways to improve my diet and sleep. 

Sleep was the most difficult aspect to improve as I had to change a lifetime of sleeping late and waking up late, but it wasn’t impossible. My next focus was to overhaul my diet, and that’s when I found out about the ketogenic diet. A friend’s relative was talking about how he improved his health and asthma by eating fatty meats and reducing carbs. This sounded so ridiculous to me as I’ve always been told eating fatty meats is terrible for your health, so I had some research to do to see if it was real. There wasn’t too much info available about the ketogenic diet at the time, but from reading the research and lots of personal stories, I was convinced that this couldn’t be much worse than my current diet, which consisted of eating fast food 2-3 times a day. After a short time of being on keto, I had more energy, and I actually felt mentally sharp, all without needing to drink any coffee! 

Fast forward a few years of successfully transitioning to eating a keto/ and low carb diet, which meant less sugar and processed foods, I picked up several recipes and tricks on how to turn regular recipes into keto-friendly ones by using natural sweeteners that had zero glycemic response such as allulose and monk fruit. I was also always trying every keto/low-carb snack, sugar-free candy, and vegan chocolate available, but I was always disappointed with the quality of the products as they had artificial ingredients, filler ingredients, bad texture, and an unpleasant taste. One day, I was so excited to try one of the new keto snacks with rave reviews, and I was initially excited because it had really clean ingredients but when I tasted it, I was so let down and disappointed that no matter how much I craved sweets and snacks, I didn’t want to waste any more money on subpar snacks that wouldn’t even satisfy my cravings… I felt so dejected that this was the best our keto community or people who just wanted to eat healthier could offer, and I knew I could make something that didn’t taste like I was sacrificing taste for health. That weekend, I started Keto Krack’d with a mission to make eating healthy easy by making the best tasting treats that were actually healthy so I, signed up for chocolate courses, and purchased confectionery books so I could educate myself on how to make truly delicious treats that were sugar-free, vegan, and keto-friendly. 

For years, I worked on Keto Krack’d on weeknights after work and for hours on the weekends, writing out business plans, testing recipes, finding suppliers, designing the brand and packaging, and all other aspects of the business. Over those years, I had time to reflect on what I enjoyed doing and what I truly wanted in life, which is to help people eat healthier by making healthy food actually taste delicious, and I had the answer! In 2021, I left my full-time job to go all in on Keto Krack’d. Although we’re still very new, we’ve had lots of positive feedback from industry leaders in the space and from people who aren’t even on keto or vegan, and it helped me realize that we’ve got something special. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The main obstacle with healthy products is that it’s difficult to create something that tastes delicious but doesn’t include any sugar or dairy. After hundreds of failed batches and non-stop research on how to create sweets without the sugar, dairy, or artificial ingredients, we finally KRACK’D the code! We KRACK’D the code to a healthier life without the sacrifice in taste with our chocolates and treats that are zero sugar, dairy-free, plant-based, keto-friendly, and diabetic-friendly. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We at Keto Krack’d want to make eating healthy not feel like a sacrifice, so we elevate classic treats but without the sugar or dairy. We’d love for people to try our Sugar-free Peanut Butter Caramel Crunch and Vegan Aloha Caramel, which are our takes on the Butterfinger and Samoas Girl Scout cookies, but much healthier and packed with high-quality ingredients. What sets us apart from other companies is that we value health and taste equally, which sound like opposites, but we did all the hard work, so you don’t have to! I’m incredibly proud that profit isn’t our main priority; instead, it’s to help make people happier and healthier with every experience with us, whether that’s directly through our enjoying our better-for-you snacks or interacting with anyone at the company. All in all, we like to have fun but take our healthy sweets seriously! 

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m not the biggest risk taker, but I did take a risk by starting my own company and pursuing it with 100% of my effort while leaving a respectable career. All my life, I’ve been taught that success meant graduating from a university and working at a well-known firm. I feel that I’ve done that, but it never felt fulfilling, and I never felt true to myself doing so. So, in a way, I did take a risk by pursuing Keto Krack’d; it doesn’t feel like much of a risk since I know it’s leading me towards a path in life that I know I will be proud of.
